My Dachshund girl is the heart of our home, especially when she’s caring for her puppies. She’s small, with that classic long body and soft, expressive eyes that always seem to understand exactly what’s going on around her. There’s something so special about the way she carries herself—gentle and calm, but always alert and aware. As a mother, she completely amazes me. From the moment her puppies are born, she becomes fully devoted to them. She keeps them tucked close to her, always making sure they’re warm, safe, and fed. I’ve watched her carefully clean each puppy and softly nudge them closer when they drift too far away—it’s like pure instinct, but also full of love. She rarely wants to leave their side, and when she does, it’s only for a moment before she’s right back checking on them. What I love most is how protective she is. Even though she’s so sweet and affectionate with us, you can tell she takes her role seriously. She’ll watch closely when someone new is nearby, just making sure everything is okay. But with people she trusts, she relaxes and lets that loving side shine through again. As her puppies grow, her personality really comes out even more. She starts playing with them, gently teaching them boundaries and how to interact. It’s the sweetest thing to watch—she’s patient, but also knows when to correct them.
