The Australian Labradoodle, often called the ALD, is a purposefully bred mix of the Labrador Retriever, Poodle, and Cocker Spaniel, with some early lines also including the Irish Water Spaniel or Curly-Coated Retriever. Developed in Australia during the 1980s, this breed was created to produce a hypoallergenic service and therapy dog that combined the Poodle’s low-shedding coat with the Labrador’s gentle temperament. Intelligent, affectionate, and adaptable, the Australian Labradoodle has since become a popular family companion known for its kind disposition and striking, teddy bear-like appearance.
Available in three sizes—standard, medium, and miniature—the Australian Labradoodle comes in many colors such as cream, red, chocolate, black, and parti. Its wavy or curly coat is soft and low-shedding, requiring brushing several times a week and professional grooming every few months. Friendly and outgoing, this breed gets along well with children and other pets, thriving on human companionship and daily activity. Energetic yet calm indoors, the Australian Labradoodle is both a devoted family pet and a capable service dog, perfectly balancing playfulness, intelligence, and loyalty.
