The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog is one of Switzerland’s oldest breeds, believed to descend from Mastiff-type dogs brought to the region by Roman legions over 2,000 years ago. Over time, these large working dogs spread throughout the Alps, where they were used by farmers to herd cattle, guard property, and pull carts loaded with goods. By the early 20th century, the breed had nearly disappeared due to industrialization and the rise of mechanized farming. In 1908, Swiss researcher Albert Heim recognized their value and helped save the breed from extinction. The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog gained official recognition in 1910 and was later introduced to the United States in 1968. In 1995, the American Kennel Club (AKC) officially recognized the Swissy as part of its Working Group.

Swissies are large, muscular dogs with a dense double coat that showcases a striking tri-color pattern of black, rust, and white. They have broad heads, expressive eyes, and medium-sized ears that lie flat against their cheeks. Known for their steady and observant temperament, Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs are brave but gentle — excellent watchdogs who rarely show aggression.
