Description

Hark, gentle traveler! From the humble straw of our birth-bed, we, the small but mighty offspring of the noble house of Dachshund, do lift our voices to greet thee! Though our statures be low to the earth, our spirits soar as high as the heavens. We do proudly declare that our lineage is bound in the sacred scrolls of the ACA registry, proving our honorable bloodline to all the kingdom. By the grace of the heavens and the skilled hands of the village healer, we have been thoroughly examined by the vet and found to be in most excellent health. We have bravely endured the sharp pricks of the needle, receiving all our protective shots, and have been cleansed of all vile internal pests with potent dewormer. We are armed and ready to venture forth into the wide world! Our sweet lady mother, Cupcake, a gentle dame of twelve pounds, abides here upon this very property, guiding our small paws with her tender wisdom. Our grand sire, Pickles, a robust and valiant warrior of sixteen pounds, hath gifted us with his brave heart and sturdy frame. We now lift our eyes to the horizon, searching for our true masters and forever homes. Wilt thou be the one to claim our fierce devotion, to share thy hearth, and to hold our loyal hearts until the end of days? We look forward with boundless joy to meeting thee in the flesh, to smelling thy hand, and to sealing our bond with a thousand happy wags of our tails.

Pros

AKC's most popular hound breed — combining apartment-friendly size with a genuine hunting dog's tenacity

Three coat varieties (smooth, wirehaired, longhaired) and two sizes (standard and miniature) offer real choice

Long-lived breed — well-cared Dachshunds regularly reach 12-16 years

Vocal watchdog in a small package — highly alert and protective despite modest size

Cons

IVDD (intervertebral disc disease) is the most significant breed health crisis — spinal injury risk is real and lifelong

Stubborn, independent terrier-like character requiring consistent patience in training

Strong prey drive and determined digging instinct — yards must be secured, small pets carefully managed

Housebreaking is notoriously difficult — a consistent crate-training approach from day one is essential
