Talk to Your Breeder
Even though it's an exciting day and it's the last thing on your mind at the time, have a conversation with the breeder at pick-up about their guarantees. Many breeders will have additional coverage in case of illness or injury. Ask for any paperwork, and keep it on hand if you need to take your pup to the vet. If they don't have a health guarantee, keep in mind that most states have laws to protect your purchase regardless of whether a seller advertises a health guarantee.
30 Day Health Guarantee
Dogs purchased through Lancaster Puppies are covered, through the breeder, up to 30 days after purchase. In Pennsylvania, dog are covered by the Pennsylvania Dog Purchaser Protection Act, which concludes that:
After taking the puppy to a vet within 10 days of purchase, if he or she is determined to have been clinically ill or has died from an injury sustained, or illness likely to have been contracted on or before the date of sale and delivery, consumers have the following options:
- Return the dog for a complete refund
- Return the dog for a replacement dog of equal value
- Retain the dog and receive reimbursement for reasonable veterinary fees
If, within 30 days of purchase, a licensed veterinarian determines that a dog has a congenital or hereditary defect which adversely affects the animal’s health, or that the dog has died from a congenital or hereditary defect, consumers have the same options as above.
While the PA Dog Purchaser Protection Act allows you 10 days to submit to a veterinary examination, we recommend that a licensed veterinarian check your puppy the same day you pick up him or her. It may be in your best interest to print out a copy of the law to easily reference if needed when you meet the seller to bring your puppy home.
