Size and Build

Foxhounds are sizable canines, with both males and females typically standing 23-25 inches tall at the shoulder and weighing between 64-70 pounds. Their physique is well-proportioned, muscular, and athletic, designed to support endurance and agility for their role in scent tracking. They possess deep chests that offer ample lung capacity and long, strong legs for sustained running. The body is lean yet powerful, with a level back and strong loin, culminating in a tail carried high and gaily.

Coat and Colors

The Foxhound's coat is short, dense, and weather-resistant, providing excellent protection outdoors. The Kennel Club accepts a broad array of color combinations, including Badger Pied, Black & White, Blue White & Tan, Hare Pied, Lemon & White, Red & White, Tan & White, Tricolor, and solid White, among others. Many colors have "mottle" variants, adding diversity within the breed’s palette. The coat sheds moderately throughout the year, with increased shedding in spring and fall.

Distinctive Features

The head is proportionate and balanced, with a long square muzzle and large nostrils conducive to scent detection. Eyes are medium-sized, hazel or brown, with an alert, keen expression. Ears are long, set high on the head, and hang close to the cheeks, enhancing the classic hound look. The Foxhound’s movement is characterized by free, effortless strides and tireless stamina, driven powerfully from the hindquarters.

Gender Differences

There is little size difference between genders, though males may be slightly heavier or bulkier in muscle mass. Temperamentally, females may be somewhat more docile, but individual variations are common. Both sexes are bred for work and maintain the energetic and social traits typical of the breed. The breed standard prioritizes functional and sound physical attributes over extreme features, aiming to preserve the dog’s working ability and health.

Finding a Foxhound puppy for sale can be challenging, as the breed is traditionally not bred for the pet market but for working packs. Those looking to adopt or rehome retired Foxhounds may have better luck contacting huntsmen or specific breed rescues. The purchase price typically ranges from $1,000 to $1,900 due to their rarity as pets. Monthly costs include insurance, which can range from approximately $28 for basic policies to $66 for lifetime coverage, plus $37-50 for high-quality food. Annual vet expenses including vaccinations and health checks typically exceed $1,200. Overall, owners should budget between $75-125 per month to meet the breed’s needs. More affordable options for pet-quality or retired dogs might be available but expect costs aligned with large active breeds.

To explore availability, please find Foxhounds for sale on Lancaster Puppies.

Foxhounds are rarely bred as pets, with most available through rehoming retired hunting dogs. Interested buyers should contact huntsmen or kennels involved in pack management to inquire about adoption or rehoming opportunities. The breed requires experienced owners comfortable with high exercise needs and strong leadership.

For those seeking Foxhounds, please find Foxhounds for sale on Lancaster Puppies where available listings may appear primarily as older dogs or retired workers.

Finding Ethical Breeders

Due to the breed’s working nature, very few breeders focus on pet homes. Ethical sourcing means ensuring the dog’s background as a working hound and verifying the breeder’s commitment to health and temperament standards. Visiting kennels and asking about socialization practices and health testing is recommended.

Health Testing Verification

Prospective owners must check for BAER testing results related to congenital deafness, particularly in dogs with white coats. Health certificates confirming veterinary inspection and vaccination history are vital. An understanding of the breed’s soundness and fitness for work is also important.

Puppy Selection Process

Since puppies are primarily "puppy walked" rather than sold, selection focuses on temperament, socialization success, and basic health rather than appearance alone. Puppies are usually returned to kennels at six months to join working packs, limiting private ownership options.

Contract and Guarantee Review

Agreements generally involve rehoming contracts rather than traditional purchase contracts. Understanding commitments regarding exercise, social needs, and the dog’s working background is essential. Guarantees may be limited given the breed’s specific role.

Rescue and Adoption Options

Numerous charitable organizations specialize in rehoming retired Foxhounds, often collaborating with hunts to find appropriate homes. Adoption processes emphasize owner experience and home suitability, ensuring lifelong welfare. Potential adopters should approach these organizations for availability and advice.

Daily Care Routine

Caring for a Foxhound involves a routine of regular grooming, daily vigorous exercise to maintain fitness, and a balanced diet suited to their life stage. Puppies require a calm environment initially, with gradual exposure to home and outdoor settings during the "puppy walking" phase. Given their strong hunting background, mental stimulation alongside physical activity significantly benefits their well-being.

Living Environment Needs

Ideal environments for Foxhounds include rural or suburban homes with extensive, securely fenced backyards that allow for free running. Urban settings are generally unsuitable due to their high exercise demands and escape tendencies. Weather-resistant coats allow them to enjoy outdoor living, but shelter and temperature management remain important across seasons.

Seasonal Care Adjustments

In summer, providing shade and fresh water is essential due to their active nature and coat type. Winter care involves ensuring protection from prolonged exposure to cold and damp conditions, as well as monitoring for joint stiffness often seen in older dogs. Adjusting exercise intensity seasonally helps maintain health without overstrain.

Senior Care Adaptations

Older Foxhounds need modified exercise regimens to accommodate reduced stamina and joint health, alongside dietary adjustments to address weight and mobility. Providing soft bedding, accessibility aids, and routine veterinary checks helps ensure quality of life during their golden years. Monitoring cognitive changes and sensory impairments supports compassionate end-of-life care.

Age-Specific Interactions

Foxhounds generally interact well with children of all ages, benefitting from their naturally social and gentle nature. However, their size and energetic playfulness mean that toddlers and young children require close supervision during interactions to prevent accidental knocks or excessive rough play. Older children and teenagers often enjoy engaging with these lively dogs through outdoor activities.

Teaching Children Proper Interaction

Adults should instruct children on how to respectfully approach and engage with a Foxhound, emphasizing calm behavior and recognizing the dog’s body language. Given the breed’s strong prey drive and high energy, children should learn not to provoke chasing games or disturb the dog when resting. Supervised introductions ensure positive early experiences for both dog and child.

Breed-Specific Considerations

Their large size and boisterous nature mean that Foxhounds are better suited to families with ample space and where children understand the importance of careful interaction. Their tendency for loud vocalizations and high energy may be challenging in very young or sensitive children without proper management.

Creating Safe Environments

A secure, spacious backyard is essential to allow the Foxhound to expend energy safely. Supervision during playtimes reduces the risk of accidental injury to children, and providing the dog with quiet retreat areas helps manage overstimulation. Households where adults can monitor activity levels and maintain consistent routines typically find Foxhounds adapt best to family life.

Daily Exercise Requirements

Foxhounds are high-energy and require between 1 to 2 hours of vigorous daily exercise to meet their stamina and mental stimulation needs. This includes long walks, free runs in secure backyards, and scenting games to engage their natural abilities. Puppies need moderated exercise to protect growing joints, avoiding strenuous activity, stairs, or jumping early on.

Suitable Activities

Activities such as tracking, scent work, endurance walking, and pack play are ideal for Foxhounds. Engaging them in hunting-related or canine sports where scenting is central helps fulfill their behavioral drives. Mental stimulation through training sessions and puzzles complements physical activity and keeps them balanced.

Exercise Restrictions

Owners must carefully manage exercise for puppies and young dogs, restricting high-impact or excessive activity before 12 months to prevent joint problems. Weather conditions also affect exercise plans; extreme heat requires limiting outdoor time and ensuring hydration, whereas cold may necessitate shorter, more frequent walks.

Mental Stimulation Ideas

Providing interaction with scent-based puzzle toys, organized scent trails, and obedience training keep Foxhounds mentally sharp. Rotating toys and varied walk routes maintain curiosity. Socialization and group activities cater to their pack instincts and reduce boredom-driven behaviors.

Nutritional Requirements

Foxhounds require a balanced diet rich in high-quality protein and moderate fat to fuel their active lifestyle and support muscular development. Caloric needs vary by age and activity level, with puppies needing nutrient-dense, frequent meals and adults requiring maintenance rations aligned with daily exercise.

Feeding Schedule Guidelines

Puppies benefit from feeding 3-4 times daily with gradual transitioning to adult food at approximately 15 months. Adults are typically fed twice daily with portions adjusted for weight and activity, usually between 11 to 15 ounces depending on the individual dog. Splitting meals helps reduce bloat risk.

Special Dietary Considerations

Due to the predisposition to bloat, it is essential to feed Foxhounds twice daily and avoid vigorous exercise immediately before or after feeding. Raised feeding stations help ease consumption for large necks. Owners should monitor food quality to prevent allergies or intolerances, though the breed is not particularly prone to these.

Weight Management

Maintaining an ideal body condition is crucial to prevent obesity, which can exacerbate joint and heart conditions. Regular weight checks and adjusting food intake alongside exercise levels help keep Foxhounds in optimal health. Senior dogs may require modified diets lower in fat and calories.

Coat Maintenance Schedule

The Foxhound’s short dense coat requires minimal maintenance, with weekly brushing recommended to remove loose hairs and maintain the natural sheen. Regular wiping with chamois leather enhances coat condition and dirt resistance. Increased shedding occurs during spring and fall, warranting more frequent grooming sessions during these periods.

Professional Grooming Requirements

Due to their low-maintenance coat, professional grooming is generally unnecessary unless owners prefer seasonal trims or specific care to maintain skin health. Routine checks and cleaning of ears are crucial to prevent infections, particularly given the breed’s long, pendulous ears.

Home Grooming Techniques

Effective grooming includes using a firm bristle brush and chamois cloth for weekly coat care. Ear inspections should be performed regularly, cleaning with vet-approved solutions when wax buildup is noticed. Nail trimming and dental hygiene are also important aspects of home care to keep Foxhounds healthy and comfortable.

Common Grooming Challenges

Although the coat is generally easy to care for, owners should watch for ear infections due to moisture and wax accumulation. Seasonal shedding can increase dirt accumulation on short coats, requiring timely grooming. Providing an appropriate diet and regular skin checks helps prevent underlying skin conditions.

Breed-Specific Health Conditions

Foxhounds are generally robust and healthy dogs with a lifespan ranging from 13 to 14 years, reflecting their strong genetic foundation. Common health concerns in the breed include osteoarthritis, heart murmurs, and kidney disease, conditions seen in many large active breeds. Additionally, congenital deafness can occur, particularly among predominantly white-coated dogs, and testing with BAER is recommended for affected individuals.

Genetic Testing Requirements

Responsible breeders frequently employ BAER testing for congenital deafness, especially in pups with extensive white markings, ensuring only hearing dogs progress in breeding programs. Regular screening helps maintain the breed’s health standard. No specific additional genetic tests are universally mandated for the Foxhound but health monitoring remains vital.

Preventive Healthcare Schedule

Puppies receive initial vaccinations before adoption, but follow-up immunizations are essential. Recommended vaccination schedule includes boosters around 10-12 weeks, with full immunity achieved two weeks after the second dose. Owners should consult veterinarians about annual boosters and parasite control to tailor preventive care plans effectively.

Insurance Considerations

Insurance premiums reflect the Foxhound’s active lifestyle and size, with basic policies costing around $28 monthly and lifetime cover approximately $66 (as of 2018). Coverage should include hereditary conditions common to the breed and provide for preventive care costs. Maintaining good health practices and early diagnosis helps reduce costly interventions later in life.

The Foxhound is a quintessential symbol of British hunting culture, with a history dating back to at least the 16th century in the UK. Originally developed to participate in fox hunting, the breed’s exact lineage is somewhat obscure but stems from a selective breeding process aimed at creating a dog with remarkable endurance, speed, and tenacity. By the 17th century, these dogs were highly prized by hunting enthusiasts throughout Great Britain, cherished for their ability to work in packs and track scents over vast distances.

Early Development

The foundational stock of the Foxhound was crafted by blending breeds such as Greyhounds for their speed, Fox Terriers for their persistence, and Bulldogs for their strength. This meticulous mix was intended to produce a relentless hunter with a strong prey drive, essential for tracking foxes. By the 19th century, fox hunting had become so popular that more than 140 registered packs existed across the UK. Breeding focused not only on physical traits like stamina and strength but also on consistent coat color within packs, usually featuring black saddles on tan bodies, which helped identify group membership.

Modern Recognition

The Foxhound is formally recognized by the Kennel Club, which maintains a breed standard to preserve its characteristics, even though it remains predominantly a working dog rather than a typical pet. Although the hunting ban has affected the breed's numbers, dedicated enthusiasts continue to preserve the lineage. Today, the Foxhound is also seen in show rings, especially in the United States, while in the UK, it is still more commonly found in working kennels. Efforts to rehome retired Foxhounds to private owners have increased, ensuring these hardworking dogs continue to have active, fulfilling lives beyond the hunt.

The Foxhound is a remarkable breed, distinguished by its large size and incredible stamina, making it a perfect companion for those involved in hunting activities. Known for its unwavering energy and friendly disposition, this scent hound is traditionally seen more as a working dog than a typical household pet. Its proud appearance and robust physical and mental traits are tailored for demanding tasks. While primarily celebrated for its hunting abilities, the Foxhound has also found a place in domestic settings, especially when retired from active duty, with owners who comprehend its specific requirements.

These dogs are not only intelligent and determined but are also bred to thrive in a pack environment, which makes them highly sociable. They crave interaction with both humans and other dogs. Their strong prey drive and high energy levels mean they are best matched with seasoned owners who can provide firm guidance and ample exercise. Although not ideal for first-time dog owners, Foxhounds that retire from hunting can adjust well to home life, provided they have plenty of outdoor space and proper training.

With physical features like a thick, weatherproof coat and a strong, muscular build, the Foxhound embodies a hardworking spirit. Its exceptional scenting ability and unique vocalizations, known as "crying" or "tonguing," set it apart. Living with a Foxhound requires a commitment to managing a lively and vocal breed that flourishes in active, social settings. Their exercise and social needs are considerable, so potential owners must be ready for the dedication needed to nurture such a vibrant breed.

Routine care includes regular grooming to keep their coat in good condition and a comprehensive health regimen due to their active outdoor lifestyle. This breed thrives in rural or country environments where they can explore safely, though secure fencing is crucial to contain their inquisitive and agile nature. Owners should also be mindful of the Foxhound's persistent hunting instincts, even after retirement. Overall, the Foxhound offers a unique companionship experience that combines tradition, athleticism, and loyalty with a need for knowledgeable handling.

Perfect For

Those with hunting experience, active families with spacious, secure backyards, and individuals familiar with scent hounds or pack dogs will appreciate the Foxhound’s attributes. Owners who can provide extensive daily exercise and mental challenges, along with strong leadership, will find the breed rewarding. Retired Foxhounds can be loving companions for owners willing to meet their social and physical demands.

Key Considerations

Not recommended for novice owners due to high exercise demands and strong prey drive. Requires secure fencing to prevent escapes and should not be left alone for long periods to avoid separation anxiety. Foxhounds are vocal and may bark or "cry" frequently. Their social nature means they thrive alongside other dogs or regular human interaction and are not ideal for small properties or urban apartments.

Core Personality Traits

Foxhounds are spirited, courageous, and highly social dogs. They excel in pack settings and form strong bonds with their handlers and other dogs. Their energy levels are exceptionally high, and they exhibit great stamina, reflecting their history as hunting dogs designed for prolonged work. While intelligent, they often display independent tendencies due to their breeding to follow scents and make decisions in the field.

Social Behavior

They generally interact well with strangers, other dogs, and even large animals such as horses, demonstrating a typically loyal and friendly nature. However, their sociability does not extend well to being left alone for long periods, as they are prone to separation anxiety. Foxhounds are vocal dogs; they "cry" or "tongue" to communicate with their pack and handlers, which may be surprising for owners expecting a quieter dog.

Working Instincts

The Foxhound’s working instincts remain strong even in retirement. Their powerful prey drive and scent-driven behavior mean they are easily distracted, making off-lead exercise challenging. They require firm, experienced handlers who can provide clear direction and boundaries. Their natural inclination to work as a team supports their bonding with family members and other dogs in the home.

Common Behavioral Challenges

Potential issues include stubbornness tied to their hunting instincts, vocalization, and the need for constant mental and physical stimulation. Owners may struggle with training recall and obedience due to their active scent drive. Without proper leadership and exercise, Foxhounds may develop destructive behaviors or excessive barking. Early socialization and continued interaction in a structured environment mitigate many of these challenges.

Foxhounds possess keen intelligence but can be challenging to train due to their strong hunting instincts and independent nature. Early socialization and the unique "puppy walking" process, where pups are gently introduced to human environments, help develop their foundational behavior. Once puppies return to the pack, training focuses on teamwork and hunting skills under skilled huntsmen.

Puppy Training Priorities

The first six months are crucial for socialization, exposure to varied environments, and basic obedience training. Consistency and patient leadership during this period support confident adults capable of working in packs or adapting to home life upon retirement.

Training Methods That Work

Positive reinforcement paired with firm guidance is essential. Motivators like food, praise, and play effectively encourage cooperation. However, due to their scent-driven focus, distractions are frequent, requiring trainers to maintain short, engaging sessions. Group training with other dogs or pack-based exercises can enhance learning by leveraging their natural social instincts.

Advanced Training Potential

Foxhounds excel in activities demanding endurance, scent work, and tracking. Retired dogs show aptitude in obedience and agility with appropriate guidance. However, training to overcome their strong prey drive for safe off-lead recall demands dedication from owners well-versed in high-energy working breeds.

Common Training Mistakes

Owners often underestimate the breed’s exercise needs and hunting instincts, leading to frustration and behavioral issues. Inconsistent training or lack of leadership can exacerbate independence and stubbornness. Avoid punishment-based techniques which may damage trust and reduce willingness to cooperate. Early, ongoing training and social engagement are paramount for successful ownership.
