Dimensions and Structure

The Pharaoh Hound is a medium-sized, athletic canine known for its lean and muscular build that conveys both elegance and strength. Males typically stand between 22 and 24 inches tall and weigh between 64 and 75 pounds, while females are slightly smaller at 20 to 22 inches in height and weigh from 55 to 64 pounds. Their bodies are well-balanced, featuring a level topline that slopes gently from the croup to the tail base, broad shoulders, and sturdy, straight legs that suggest speed and agility.

Coat and Coloration

This breed is adorned with a short, lustrous coat that can be fine or slightly harsh in texture. The recognized colors include rich tan, tan, and tan with white markings. Typical white markings may include a white tip on the tail, a white star on the chest, a subtle white blaze on the face, and minor white on the toes. This coat not only accentuates their sleek musculature but also requires minimal grooming.

Unique Characteristics

The Pharaoh Hound's head is long and finely sculpted, with a slight stop and a nose that matches the coat color. Their deep-set amber eyes radiate intelligence and are complemented by high-set, broad-based ears that stand erect when the dog is alert. The tail is tapered, thicker at the base, and curves upward when excited, settling into a relaxed position when calm. Their movement is smooth and flowing, embodying the grace of a true sighthound.

Sexual Dimorphism

While males tend to be slightly larger and more robust, females exhibit a similar structure with a refined demeanor. Both genders share the breed's noble traits and athletic grace, though males may present a more striking presence in shows. Temperamentally, both sexes are alert, active, and affectionate when well socialized.

Pharaoh Hound puppies are a rare find in the UK, often requiring prospective owners to join waiting lists with responsible breeders. Purchasing a healthy, well-bred Kennel Club registered puppy typically costs between $1,000 and $2,500, depending on breeder reputation, pedigree quality, and markings.

Initial setup costs include quality crates, grooming equipment, training aids, and puppy-proofing essentials, which can add several hundred dollars. Monthly expenses typically range from $90 to $130, covering premium dog food, routine vet visits, insurance, and grooming.

Veterinary costs include vaccinations, neutering/spaying, and health checks, averaging over $1,300 annually in upkeep. Insurance premiums vary, with basic cover costing approximately $30 monthly and lifetime coverage up to $55 per month, depending on the dog's age and location in the UK.

Financial planning should take into account the Pharaoh Hound's active lifestyle needs of secure, spacious living environments and quality care products.
Finding a well-bred Pharaoh Hound for sale in the UK can be challenging due to the breed’s rarity and careful breeding practices. Prospective owners should prioritize ethical breeders who conduct health screenings and maintain breed standards rather than those offering unusually low prices or no health guarantees.

Identifying Reputable Breeders

Verify breeder credentials, ask for health test results including patella and hip scores, and ensure the puppies are raised in a clean, social environment. The dam should not exceed four litters per Kennel Club regulations, and the breeder should provide comprehensive puppy documentation.

Ensuring Health Screenings

Request certificates for breed-specific tests such as patella evaluations and hip scoring. Checking Kennel Club registrations and use of the Breed Club schemes strengthens confidence in breeder transparency and puppy health.

Choosing the Right Puppy

Observe puppy temperament carefully, looking for confident, playful, and sociable behavior. Health checks at the breeder’s premises, including veterinary screenings, are vital before selection.

Reviewing Contracts and Guarantees

Read and understand all contract clauses related to health, return policies, and registration. Avoid sellers who cannot provide these assurances or push quick sales.

Exploring Rescue Options

Consider breed-specific rescues and adoption if purchasing from a breeder is not viable. These organizations can offer well-cared-for Pharaoh Hounds needing new homes and provide guidance on breed characteristics and care.

Routine Daily Care

Pharaoh Hounds require a balance of exercise, grooming, and rest to maintain their health and happiness. A typical day involves morning and afternoon walks, interactive play, mental stimulation, basic grooming like wiping down the coat, and regular ear checks to prevent infections.

Living Environment Requirements

A spacious and securely fenced yard is crucial to accommodate their need to roam safely. These dogs are sensitive to cold; therefore, in cooler climates, providing warm bedding and a dog coat for walks is beneficial.

Adjustments for Different Seasons

During colder months, extra measures like thicker bedding and coats help prevent chills. In warmer seasons, shaded resting areas and plenty of fresh water are crucial to avoid overheating.

Adapting Care for Seniors

As Pharaoh Hounds age, adjustments in diet, gentle exercise routines, and supportive bedding become important. Monitoring joint health and mobility allows early intervention for arthritis, while keeping activity levels appropriate helps maintain muscle tone without overexertion.

Interactions by Age

Pharaoh Hounds generally interact well with children when raised together, showing patience and gentle behavior, especially with older children who understand canine boundaries. Supervision is necessary with toddlers to prevent unintentional rough play that might unsettle the dog.

Teaching Respectful Interaction

It is important to teach children how to behave respectfully around dogs, including not pulling ears or tails, approaching calmly, and recognizing signs of discomfort. Establishing clear, consistent rules helps foster a positive relationship between the dog and children.

Considerations for the Breed

Due to the Pharaoh Hound's athleticism and energy, children should be mindful of the dog's need for active play and physical space. Their moderate size allows safe play with children, but supervision is required to prevent overexuberance.

Ensuring a Safe Environment

Supervised, calm play areas and access to quiet spaces for the dog ensure safe coexistence. Providing an escape or rest area reduces stress, particularly in busy family homes.

Exercise Needs

As a high-energy sighthound, the Pharaoh Hound requires at least two hours of vigorous daily exercise, including long walks, running, and engaging activities to expend energy and prevent boredom. Puppies need moderated activity schedules to protect growing joints.

Recommended Activities

Ideal exercises include lure coursing, running in secure areas, agility training, and interactive games that combine physical exertion with mental stimulation.

Exercise Limitations

Puppies should avoid jumping on and off furniture and excessive stair use to prevent joint strain. Daily walks in adverse weather should consider the breed’s sensitivity to cold, with coats provided as needed during winter.

Mental Enrichment Ideas

Incorporate puzzle toys, obedience drills, and scent work to engage their sharp minds and reduce destructive behavior at home. A weekly schedule balancing intense exercise with calmer recovery periods helps maintain health and temperament.

Dietary Needs

Pharaoh Hound puppies thrive on a highly nutritious, balanced diet rich in protein and moderate fat content to support their active growth and energy needs. Adults require high-quality diets tailored to their weight and exercise levels, with a focus on digestible ingredients and balanced nutrients.

Feeding Routine

Puppies should be fed three to four times daily with measured portions, gradually transitioning to twice-daily adult feeding after one year. Adults should receive two meals daily, with portion sizes adjusted for activity and metabolism.

Special Dietary Requirements

The breed is prone to bloat; thus, feeding two smaller meals daily rather than one large meal is advised. Elevated bowls help ease swallowing and reduce risks associated with gastric torsion. Avoid exercise immediately before and after meals.

Maintaining Healthy Weight

Regular monitoring prevents obesity, particularly post-neutering and in older dogs. Maintaining a lean, muscular body condition requires balanced feeding and consistent exercise. Consultation with a veterinarian for diet adjustments is recommended for optimal health.

Coat Care Routine

The Pharaoh Hound’s short, sleek coat requires minimal grooming, with a weekly wipe-down using a chamois leather or grooming glove to maintain shine and remove loose hairs. Increased shedding occurs during spring and autumn, necessitating more frequent brushing to manage loose hair.

Need for Professional Grooming

Professional grooming is generally not required for this breed due to the coat’s low-maintenance nature; however, scheduled vet visits should include ear cleaning and nail trimming maintenance.

Home Grooming Practices

Regular home ear checks are essential to remove wax and prevent infections. Nail clippers, rounded-end scissors for any small coat trims, dog-specific toothpaste, and toothbrush are recommended to maintain oral health. Bathing should be done with gentle, dog-specific shampoos to avoid skin irritation.

Challenges in Grooming

The breed’s sensitive skin requires careful product selection to avoid allergies or irritation. Despite low shedding overall, seasonal coat changes may lead to mats if not gently brushed out. Cold sensitivity requires consideration with outdoor wear to prevent chills.

Specific Health Concerns

The Pharaoh Hound is generally a healthy breed with a lifespan of around 12 to 14 years. However, they can be susceptible to certain hereditary issues such as hypothyroidism, luxating patellas, eye conditions, skin allergies, and potentially bloat (gastric torsion). They may also be prone to epilepsy and some forms of cancer, particularly in older age.

Genetic Testing Recommendations

Responsible breeders engage in health screening programs that include patella testing through the Breed Club Scheme and BVA-registered veterinary hip scoring. These tests help ensure breed health and minimize hereditary concerns.

Preventive Health Measures

Vaccination schedules begin for puppies at 10–12 weeks, with follow-up boosters as advised by veterinarians. Regular health checks, dental care, and parasite control are essential throughout the dog's life to maintain well-being.

Insurance and Health Management

Considering the breed's potential health issues, comprehensive pet insurance is recommended to manage unexpected veterinary expenses. Premiums take into account the dog's age, location, and neutering status. Monitoring for allergies and maintaining a healthy weight are crucial to reducing long-term health risks.

The Pharaoh Hound is among the most ancient dog breeds, with depictions in Egyptian artifacts that are over 3,000 years old. Although their precise beginnings are somewhat enigmatic, archaeological discoveries, such as the remains found in Queen Her-Neith’s tomb in Saqqara during the 1950s, bear a strong resemblance to the contemporary Pharaoh Hound. Historically, these dogs were esteemed as hunters of small game and as loyal companions to the elite.

Origin and Development

It is believed that the breed evolved on the island of Malta, where it is referred to as Kelb Tal-Fenek, or 'Dog of the Rabbit,' highlighting its traditional role in rabbit hunting alongside ferrets. Some historical accounts suggest that the breed was introduced to Malta by ancient traders from Egypt, possibly the Phoenicians, around 1000 BC. Over the course of 2,000 years, Maltese farmers meticulously bred the dogs to retain their hunting abilities and maintain the breed's purity.

Modern Recognition

In the 20th century, the Pharaoh Hound made its way to the UK, with the first imports arriving in the 1930s, although breeding lines were not established until the 1960s. Key imports such as Bahri, Luki, and Chu-Cha from Malta contributed to the first UK-bred litter, and in 1974, the Kennel Club officially recognized the breed. Despite its rarity in the UK, the Pharaoh Hound's popularity is on the rise, with increasing numbers of puppies registered each year. The breed made its debut at the prestigious Crufts dog show in 1970 with a dog named Birling Zahara.

The Pharaoh Hound is a breed that brings together a rich tapestry of ancient history and a distinctive, regal appearance. These medium-sized canines are celebrated not only for their sleek and athletic physique but also for their vibrant energy and lively spirit. With a glossy, short coat and an elegant stance, they are more than just a sight to behold; they are dynamic companions known for their innate hunting prowess that has persisted through the ages. A unique trait of this breed is their ability to blush and smile when thrilled, coupled with their striking amber eyes, which contribute to their noble and charismatic aura.

Initially developed as hunting dogs, Pharaoh Hounds maintain their ancestral instincts and thrive in environments that offer ample opportunities for both physical and mental engagement. They are not suited for sedentary lifestyles and require owners who are committed to meeting the needs of an active sighthound. Their intelligence and independent nature necessitate an experienced owner familiar with training breeds that have a strong will and a playful, sometimes mischievous, demeanor. Managing their high prey drive is crucial for a harmonious household.

Ideal living situations for Pharaoh Hounds include homes with large, securely fenced yards where they can safely expend their energy. These dogs flourish with families or individuals who enjoy outdoor activities and can dedicate several hours each day to exercise. Their temperament is a blend of loyalty and gentleness with children, and their alertness makes them excellent watchdogs, although they may be reserved around strangers and naturally inclined to vocalize.

Care for Pharaoh Hounds involves moderate maintenance, focusing on regular grooming to keep their coat in top condition and a balanced diet to support their lean build and high activity level. Training should be positive and consistent, starting early with socialization to nurture a well-adjusted pet. With the right environment, this ancient breed offers not just companionship but also elegance, charm, and an unending zest for life.

Best Suited For

Pharaoh Hounds are perfect for experienced dog owners who lead active, outdoor-oriented lifestyles and can dedicate ample time to exercise and training. Families with older children and homes with spacious, secure yards will find these dogs to be engaging and rewarding companions.

Important Considerations

Their energetic nature and hunting instincts necessitate secure fencing and vigilant oversight. They are not ideal for novice owners or those with a less active lifestyle. Early socialization and mental challenges are essential to prevent behavioral issues such as excessive barking and separation anxiety.

Essential Personality Traits

Pharaoh Hounds are intelligent and independent, forming close bonds with their families while maintaining a dignified and somewhat reserved disposition. They are affectionate and playful at home, often showcasing a sense of humor and lively spirit. Their sensitivity calls for gentle, consistent handling to build trust and obedience.

Interaction with Others

These dogs generally do well with children and can be sociable with other dogs if socialized early. However, their pronounced prey drive means they may show keen interest in smaller animals, necessitating careful supervision. They tend to be cautious with strangers, preferring to observe before engaging, and their vocal nature serves more as an alert than an aggressive warning.

Heritage and Instincts

True to their roots, Pharaoh Hounds possess a high prey drive, alertness, and energy levels that demand ample exercise and mental stimulation. Their hunting instincts make them excellent spot-and-chase dogs, thriving in activities that require speed and agility.

Behavioral Challenges

Insufficient exercise or stimulation can lead to boredom-induced behaviors such as destructiveness or excessive vocalization. Their sensitivity and intelligence can result in stubbornness if training lacks consistency and positive reinforcement. Early socialization is vital to prevent timidity and excessive barking, while their tendency for separation anxiety means they should not be left alone for extended periods.

Pharaoh Hounds are highly intelligent and capable of learning, but their training requires an understanding of their sensitive and independent nature. Early, consistent, and positive reinforcement-based training is crucial to foster good behavior and manage their natural instincts.

Initial Training Focus

Socialization and obedience training should begin as early as eight weeks, exposing puppies to various environments, people, sounds, and other animals to build confidence. Basic commands such as come, sit, stay, heel, quiet, leave it, down, and bed should be introduced early with patience and positivity.

Effective Training Techniques

Reward-based training using treats, toys, and praise is particularly effective with Pharaoh Hounds. Harsh corrections or loud reprimands are counterproductive and can cause stress or resistance. Training sessions should be kept short and engaging to maintain the dog's focus and interest, incorporating games and mental challenges.

Advanced Training Opportunities

With the right guidance, Pharaoh Hounds excel in activities such as agility, obedience, and lure coursing, showcasing their speed and intelligence. Their quick thinking can sometimes outsmart trainers, so consistency and clear communication are essential.

Common Training Pitfalls

Delaying training or using punishment-based methods can lead to behavioral issues, including stubbornness, ignoring commands, or dominance problems. Inconsistent rules within the household can confuse the dog, so all family members must adhere to agreed training strategies.
