Size and Build

Male and female Shihpoos typically stand between 8 to 15 inches at the shoulder and weigh between 7 to 20 pounds, with size variations depending on whether a Toy or Miniature Poodle was used in the breeding. They possess compact, well-muscled bodies with slightly longer muzzles than pure Shih Tzus in some cases, especially when favoring Poodle lineage. Their proportions are balanced, showing strong necks, well-laid-back shoulders, and sturdy legs ending in rounded, padded feet.

Coat and Colors

The Shihpoo's coat varies notably across individuals. Some have the soft, curly coat typical of the Poodle, while others bear the straighter, longer coat resembling the Shih Tzu. Some Shihpoos display a blend of both textures. The coat is always soft and luxurious to the touch and can present in numerous colors and combinations, including apricot, black, black and tan, brown, cream, red, sable, white, and parti-color patterns.

Distinctive Features

These dogs often exhibit large, round, dark eyes with an alert yet mischievous expression. Their ears are large and floppy, hanging down to the sides of their faces, complementing their rounded heads and broad foreheads. Some possess the distinctive "chrysanthemum face" resembling their Shih Tzu parent. Nose color usually matches the coat, and the stop is well defined. Tails are plumed and carried curled over the back.

Gait and Movement

The Shihpoo moves with a dainty, springy gait characterized by bouncing steps and an alert stance. Their front legs often extend forward in a lively manner, reflecting their playful and keen nature.

Gender Differences

Males tend to be slightly larger and more robust than females, though both sexes share similar temperamental traits. Behavior and intelligence levels are consistent across genders, with any differences manifesting more in size and energy levels rather than character.

Breed Standard Notes

As an unrecognized crossbreed, no official breed standard exists, but responsible breeders avoid extremes in size and conformation. Puppies that are excessively small or exhibit exaggerated features are discouraged, as these can often lead to significant health issues.

Prospective Shihpoo owners can expect to pay between $750 and $1,250 for a well-bred puppy from an individual or licensed breeder. Prices vary depending on parentage (Toy or Miniature Poodle lineage), coat type, color, and breeder reputation. Show quality or multigenerational Shihpoos bred with emphasis on temperament and health might command higher prices.

Initial setup costs include essentials such as quality bedding, grooming supplies, toys, and feeding equipment, typically amounting to $250 to $500. Food costs generally range between $20 to $27 per month to maintain a balanced diet suitable for the breed's size and energy expenditure.

Regular veterinary care, including annual vaccinations, boosters, parasite prevention, and dental care, can amount to more than $750 annually. Pet insurance costs vary — basic cover may start around $35 per month, while comprehensive lifetime policies can be closer to $62 per month, depending on factors like location and the dog's health status.

Ultimately, the average monthly running cost of a Shihpoo is approximately $65 to $90, excluding the initial purchase price. Responsible owners should budget carefully for grooming, health care, and variable expenses related to the dog's activity level and age.

You can find Shihpoo for sale on Lancaster Puppies, where many breeders and individuals advertise puppies and older dogs, offering a range of choices for potential owners.

With their popularity rising in the US, prospective Shihpoo owners should exercise caution when purchasing to avoid scams and unethical breeding practices. It is paramount to buy from responsible breeders or reputable individuals who prioritize health and welfare.

You can find Shihpoo for sale on Lancaster Puppies, where verified breeders and experienced owners list litters and adult dogs.

Finding Ethical Breeders

Seek breeders who are transparent about their breeding methods, willing to show health testing results, and provide a clean, caring environment for puppies. Visiting the breeder’s premises to meet puppies and parents is essential.

Health Testing Verification

Ensure the breeder performs appropriate health screenings such as hip scoring, DNA tests for progressive retinal atrophy, and Von Willebrand's disease to reduce genetic problems.

Puppy Selection Process

Observe puppies for temperament, health, and socialization traits. Puppies should be active but not overly boisterous, with clear eyes, clean ears, and healthy coats.

Contract and Guarantee Review

A clear written contract outlining health guarantees, return policies, and ownership responsibilities protects buyers. Red flags include unwillingness to provide paperwork or avoid home visits.

Rescue and Adoption Options

Shihpoos and similar crosses occasionally appear in rescue shelters or breed-specific rescues. Adoption offers a loving alternative; prospective owners are encouraged to consider this option.

Daily care for Shihpoos involves grooming attention suited to individual coat types, regular exercise to maintain fitness, and a balanced diet matched to life stages. Regular health monitoring and social interaction are equally important to ensure well-being.

Daily Care Routine

A typical day might begin with morning grooming touch-ups, followed by a short walk or play session. Feeding times should be consistent, with opportunities for mental stimulation such as interactive toys or training sessions. Evening routines include calming activities and quieter engagement to help the dog settle.

Living Environment Needs

Shihpoos adapt well to apartment living but appreciate access to secure garden spaces. Their small size means they do not require large living areas but benefit from enrichment and consistent routines. Extreme temperatures should be moderated, with shade and water in summer and warmth in winter.

Seasonal Care Adjustments

In warmer months, extra attention is needed to prevent overheating and to inspect ears for infections risk due to increased outdoor activity. Winters may require coats or blankets to support older dogs or those with thinner coats.

Senior Care Adaptations

Seniors require adjustments including softer bedding, reduced but regular exercise, and monitoring for joint stiffness or sensory decline. Special diets with controlled protein and fat levels support aging bodies.

The Shihpoo is best suited for families with children who understand how to treat small dogs gently and respectfully. They do not tolerate rough handling, which can lead to defensive behaviors like snapping. Thus, interactions between the dog and toddlers or very young children should always be closely supervised to ensure everyone’s safety.

Age-Specific Interactions

Older children and teenagers tend to interact well with Shihpoos, understanding the dog's limits and respect for boundaries. Toddlers require adult oversight to prevent accidental harm to or from the dog, while younger children should be taught to respect the dog’s space during eating and resting times.

Teaching Children Proper Interaction

Parents should educate children on appropriate ways to approach and touch the dog, emphasizing gentle handling and quiet behavior around the animal. Setting clear rules about not pulling ears, tails or fur and never disturbing the dog during sleep or meals is essential.

Breed-Specific Considerations

While Shihpoos are small, their playful energy can be surprising. Their vocal nature may also require teaching children to understand when the dog is trying to communicate or needs attention. Their moderate size and sensitivity mean they benefit from calm, respectful households.

Creating Safe Environments

Supervision is crucial during all interactions. Providing the dog with a quiet retreat area helps minimize stress and allows the dog to disengage from overwhelming situations. This is particularly significant in busy households or those with unpredictable younger children.

Shihpoos are energetic and intelligent small dogs needing both physical and mental stimulation daily to maintain health and happiness. They generally require around 30 to 40 minutes of exercise each day, including walks and playtime, ideally with some off-lead time in secure environments.

Daily Exercise Requirements

A morning walk of about 15 minutes and a longer, more stimulating afternoon walk provide good physical output. Access to a securely fenced garden is beneficial for free play. However, as puppies, they must have restricted exercise to protect their developing joints and spine — avoiding jumping and stairs is advised.

Suitable Activities

The breed enjoys interactive play, fetch, agility training, and swimming, weather permitting. Mental exercises like puzzle toys and training games help prevent boredom and destructive behaviors.

Exercise Restrictions

Over-exercising young Shihpoos can lead to joint problems; thus, controlled physical activity is essential. Extreme weather conditions may also limit outdoor time for safety.

Mental Stimulation Ideas

Enrichment through food puzzle feeders, scent games, and obedience tasks support their cognitive needs, promoting a balanced and calm companion.

Feeding a Shihpoo requires adherence to age-appropriate, high-quality nutrition to support their small stature and active lifestyle. Consistency in diet helps avoid digestive upsets, particularly during dietary transitions from puppy to adult food.

Nutritional Requirements

Puppies need nutrient-dense diets high in protein and fat for development, while adult and senior dogs benefit from balanced formulas with controlled calories to prevent obesity. Key nutrients include proteins between 14–21%, fats below 10%, and limited fibers.

Feeding Schedule Guidelines

Puppies are best fed 3 to 4 times daily with portion sizes adjusted by age and build. As a puppy reaches 11 months, transition to adult food can begin. Adults typically receive two meals daily, with portions depending on weight and activity.

Special Dietary Considerations

The Shihpoo may have sensitivities; watch for signs of allergies or food intolerances. Supplementing with vet-recommended vitamins or omega-3 oils can support coat and joint health.

Weight Management

Maintaining an ideal body condition by monitoring waistline and adjusting food intake and exercise is vital to prevent obesity and associated health risks.

Grooming needs depend primarily on the coat type inherited from either parent. Shihpoos with Poodle-like curly coats require more frequent grooming to prevent matting compared to those with straighter Shih Tzu-type coats. Regardless, all Shihpoos benefit from regular professional grooming several times per year to maintain coat condition.

Coat Maintenance Schedule

Daily brushing is advised for those with curlier coats to avoid tangles, while straighter coats require brushing at least a few times weekly. Seasonal shedding periods in spring and autumn entail increased grooming vigilance.

Professional Grooming Requirements

Professional grooming every 6 to 8 weeks helps maintain the coat’s health and manage length, especially for show or pet-quality dogs. Costs vary by region and groomer expertise.

Home Grooming Techniques

At home, owners should employ grooming gloves, slicker brushes, rounded scissors for trimming around eyes and paws, dog-specific shampoo, and regular ear cleaning to prevent infections. Nail clipping is essential every few weeks.

Common Grooming Challenges

Tear staining under the eyes is common and requires gentle daily cleaning. Preventing matting and addressing skin sensitivities also form part of essential care routines.

The average lifespan of a Shihpoo is typically between 10 and 17 years, contingent on good care, proper diet, and regular veterinary attention.

Breed-Specific Health Conditions

Being a hybrid of the Shih Tzu and Miniature Poodle or Toy Poodle, the Shihpoo can inherit various health issues common to both parent breeds. These include hip dysplasia, patellar luxation, eye disorders such as progressive retinal atrophy, dental problems, and respiratory issues like brachycephalic airway syndrome depending on the muzzle shape. Regular dental care, including daily brushing and professional cleanings, is essential to prevent periodontal disease.

Genetic Testing Requirements

Responsible breeders will screen breeding dogs for inherited conditions, including DNA tests for progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), hip score evaluations, and Von Willebrand’s disease testing. These tests help reduce the incidence of genetic disorders in puppies.

Preventive Healthcare Schedule

Shihpoo puppies should complete their core vaccination schedule at 10 to 12 weeks with follow-up boosters according to veterinary recommendations. Regular health checks, dental care, and parasite prevention are essential for maintaining health.

Insurance Considerations

Owners should consider pet insurance that covers hereditary and chronic conditions. Common claims often relate to allergies, eye issues, and joint problems. Comparing policies ensures the best coverage based on individual dog health history, age, and lifestyle.

The Shihpoo made its debut in the United States approximately two decades ago, crafted intentionally to create a hypoallergenic pet that marries the adored qualities of the Shih Tzu with either the Miniature Poodle or Toy Poodle. Breeders aspired to develop a petite dog with a friendly disposition, high intellect, and adaptability to both city and countryside living, while being suitable for allergy sufferers due to the Poodle's low-shedding coat.

Early Development

The Shihpoo was initially bred by enthusiasts of hybrid dogs and small dog specialists, focusing on creating a companion animal that combined the charm and affectionate nature of the Shih Tzu with the intelligence and hypoallergenic coat of the Poodle. This crossbreed's varied coat appearance and mixed traits were indicative of the early experimental nature of breeding programs. Over time, efforts were made to stabilize characteristics and health, with a focus on avoiding breeding very small, unhealthy specimens. The Shihpoo has not yet achieved official Kennel Club recognition, but local breed clubs and online communities foster responsible breeding standards and health testing among breeders worldwide.

Modern Recognition

Although not recognized by The Kennel Club, the Shihpoo has gained popularity internationally as a companion dog. Multigenerational breeding is helping to standardize desirable traits and health profiles. In the UK, dedicated hybrid dog groups provide support and information to owners and breeders alike, promoting welfare and education. Despite lacking formal breed status, the Shihpoo's rising popularity signals its growing acceptance in modern pet-owning communities.

The Shihpoo is a captivating canine mix that results from the union of the Shih Tzu and either a Miniature or Toy Poodle. This delightful hybrid showcases an intriguing blend of features from its parent breeds, leading to small dogs that might possess the curly coat typical of the Poodle or the longer, straighter fur of the Shih Tzu. Notably, puppies from the same litter can display a wide array of appearances and coat textures, presenting an exciting spectrum of colors and patterns.

Bred primarily for companionship, Shihpoos have swiftly become cherished family pets, renowned for their affectionate and spirited demeanor. They adapt well to domestic life, thriving equally in bustling urban apartments and spacious rural homes. Their intelligence, particularly inherited from the Poodle, makes them highly trainable and attentive, excelling in environments where interaction and mental stimulation are abundant.

Shihpoos are an excellent choice for first-time dog owners seeking a manageable, versatile, and amiable pet. Their moderate exercise needs and compact size make them suitable for various lifestyles, while their sociable nature ensures they form close bonds with their human families. However, prospective owners should be prepared for their grooming and training demands, which require consistent attention to maintain their well-being and temperament.

Perfect For

Individuals seeking a smart, adaptable companion that fits comfortably in both urban apartments and rural homes. Families with older children, singles, and seniors often find the Shihpoo to be an ideal match due to its affectionate nature and ease of training.

Key Considerations

Prospective owners should be aware of the Shihpoo's grooming needs, which vary depending on coat type. They may be prone to separation anxiety, necessitating a household where they are not left alone for extended periods. Early and consistent training is crucial to prevent behavioral issues often observed in small breeds, such as "small dog syndrome."

The Shihpoo is an intelligent, affectionate, and fun-loving companion, inheriting the vibrant personality traits of its parent breeds. The Poodle contributes high intelligence, while the Shih Tzu provides a playful and outgoing disposition. Together, they produce a dog eager to please yet sometimes prone to stubbornness, making early socialization and consistent training essential.

Shihpoos can be boisterous as puppies, necessitating firm and fair handling to avoid the development of "small dog syndrome," a behavioral condition common in small breeds where the dog becomes overly dominant or unruly. Regular socialization with new environments, people, animals, and situations from a young age helps cultivate a confident and well-rounded adult.

These dogs thrive on being part of a pack and seek clear leadership within the household. Without firm boundaries and guidance, they may attempt to assume dominance themselves. They form strong, loyal bonds with their families and are especially cherished by older adults due to their companionable nature.

Core Personality Traits

Shihpoos are friendly, outgoing, and highly social. They possess a cheerful disposition, often described as "clowns" by their owners due to their entertaining antics and playful nature. Their love for interaction makes them excellent pets for those who enjoy an engaging canine companion.

Social Behavior

Generally, Shihpoos are amiable towards strangers and other dogs, though early socialization remains key to preventing any fearfulness or overprotectiveness. They tend to get along well with other household pets when properly introduced but may exhibit chasing instincts towards smaller animals like squirrels or cats, a trait inherited from their hunting ancestry.

Working Instincts

Despite their small size, Shihpoos retain working dog instincts including alertness and a moderate prey drive. They make good watchdogs in terms of alerting owners to visitors but their friendly nature limits aggressive guarding. They are quick learners, utilizing their intelligence in both work and play.

Common Behavioral Challenges

Owners should anticipate possible separation anxiety due to the breed's strong bonding tendencies. Excessive barking, especially for attention, can develop without early training intervention. Being spoilt or allowed to dominate can lead to behavioral issues such as stubbornness and difficulty with recall. These challenges are manageable with early socialization, consistent boundaries, and positive reinforcement training methods.

The Shihpoo is a smart, eager-to-learn breed, inheriting significant intelligence from its Poodle parent combined with the affectionate nature of its Shih Tzu lineage. This combination renders the breed quite trainable, though occasional stubborn tendencies require a patient, consistent approach.

Training should commence early, ideally after the puppy has received its complete vaccination course. Puppy kindergarten classes provide excellent socialization and foundational obedience training, facilitating confident development and good canine manners.

Puppy Training Priorities

In the first six months, the primary focus should be on socialization, house training, basic obedience commands, and early recall. Key commands such as "come," "sit," "stay," "quiet," "leave it," "down," and "bed" form the cornerstone of their education. Exposure to varied environments, people, and animals during this window is critical for a well-adjusted adult dog.

Training Methods That Work

Positive reinforcement methods—including praise, play, and high-value treats—are especially effective with Shihpoos. Training sessions should be kept short and engaging to maintain the dog's interest and avoid frustration. Harsh corrections are counterproductive, as Shihpoos respond poorly to heavy-handedness but flourish under fair, consistent guidance.

Advanced Training Potential

Once basic obedience is mastered, Shihpoos can excel in activities such as agility, rally obedience, and canine freestyle due to their agility and intelligence. Their compact size suits them well for indoor activities and participation in dog sports tailored for smaller breeds.

Common Training Mistakes

Owners should avoid spoiling or inconsistent training, as this promotes "small dog syndrome," resulting in dominance and wilfulness. Repetition of training exercises is important but should be balanced with novelty to prevent boredom. Overuse of food rewards can lead to obesity, so treats should be judiciously given.
