We have had Border Collies as working dogs here on our ranch, however they are also our pets, and it has been that way for about 29 yrs now. We also have raised Australian Shepherds. We would love for you to read on and learn a bit about our dogs. We started with a male Border Collie, Jake. A few years down the road we did purchase a female and in the years that followed had several litters of ABCA puppies. Fast forward about 14 yrs when our Jake passed away. At that time, my husband, Rick, thought he would like to see how an Australian Shepherd would work for us & he purchased Gus. Rick wanted to find a dog from a working ranch, not a show breeder, but someone who like us, had dogs that they enjoyed as pets and used for working their cattle. Gus came from such a place in Iowa & was AKC registered. A few more years passed and I longed for a female Border Collie again with the idea of possibly having another litter of puppies. It is so rewarding (& fun) to raise a litter of puppies and to see the joy they bring each family in years to come. Enter Jewel. She was and is the exact temperament to make a good family dog and help out on our ranch. Much to my dismay I could not find an acceptable male Border Collie. After some discussion we decided to let Gus and Jewel mate. The success of that litter was wonderful and over the next few years they had several litters. To our delightful surprise, it has turned out to be a sought after cross. We have in fact had several clients purchase a 2nd puppy from us. This is such a blessing to us because not only does it show how well these dogs work out in their new homes, it helps us as we already have met the family and know the new puppy is going to a great home. In 2016, friends of ours with an Australian Shepherd bred their female with Gus and had a beautiful litter. We knew Gus was getting older and didn't want to lose his bloodlines, as he was an excellent dog and had no health issues, so we kept a female out of that litter, all the boys were gone before we decided this or we would have gotten a male. That little girl, Sky, is our blue merle female Australian Shepherd. We are thankful we did because the following year Gus passed away. We wanted another male, unrelated to Gus and contacted the people in Iowa that Gus was from and they had a tri-male available. They, like us, only breed family ranch dogs they feel are worthy of passing on good traits. We felt we could trust them and Pepper has turned out great. We also have Boots, a female out of Jewel by Gus. Everyone that meets her says she has to be the sweetest, friendliest dog they ever met. However, she has gained competition for sweetest family dog when we kept Brandy, a pure Aussie we kept from Pepper & Sky. If you were keeping track, Brandy is the 5th dog we own. Should you ever want to come see a litter of puppies you will meet Jewel, Boots, Sky, Brandy & Pepper. You will see they are all loved and healthy happy dogs. Hopefully that gives you a bit of insight into our litters of puppies. UPDATE: Earlier this year, sadly, we had to say goodbye to Jewel. She was 13 and loved working cattle, but was just as content being a wonderful companion to me, Kim, outside taking walks, being nearby while I tended to my gardens or laying by my chair in the office. Border Collies do love being outside and playing or working, but Jewel was one of those well rounded Border Collies who knew how to be calm and she could just as easily relax inside. Frisbee or fetching ball were some of her favorite outdoor games but she also loved catching popcorn, one of her favorite snacks. Jewel was one of the best natural canine moms I ever saw & raised many wonderful litters of pups which went on to bring much joy and happiness to many households. All of her wonderful characteristics were why we chose to breed her so that she would bring positive attention to what a wonderful breed of dogs Border Collies are, when bred correctly. I miss her terribly. One thing that helped bring comfort was she was active & healthy right up till the day before her passing, having done one of her other favorite things, going along on a trail ride with the horses.
