History: Despite the well-documented history of its two parent breeds, the Chihuahua and the Dachshund, the Chiweenie's origins are fairly ambiguous. However, it is likely that the Chiweenie was developed in the United States during the early to mid 1990s, when breeders began intentionally mixing two purebred dogs to create puppies that combined the best traits of both parent breeds. These dogs became known as designer dogs, and among them was the Chiweenie. Over the years, the Chiweenie grew in popularity, and today the breed is recognized by several small dog clubs for hybrid and designer breeds.

Temperament: The Chiweenie is a little dog that's full of energy and spunk. Devoted and loyal, Chiweenies tend to grow attached to one person over everyone else and designate them as their "pack leader." That said, the Chiweenie may be better-suited for one-person homes or smaller families, since they require a good amount of attention. One thing to note about Chiweenies is that they love to bark, so they may not be the best choice for apartment living. However, Chiweenies can be trained to minimize their barking during puppyhood. In terms of energy level, the Chiweenie falls somewhere in the middle. While they love to play and romp around, they're also more than happy to cuddle and relax with their human companions. Over all, the Chiweenie makes an affectionate and loyal companion.
