History: Also called the Maltichon, the Mal-chon is an adorable hybrid of the Maltese and the Bichon Frise. While both the Bichon and the Maltese originated in the Mediterranean, the Mal-chon likely developed in the United States, though it's hard to say for certain. Like most designer dogs, the Mal-chon doesn't have a very well-documented history. However, most experts agree that the Mal-chon originated sometime during the 1980s or 90s, which is when the breeding of designer dogs really took off. The breed quickly gained popularity, and the Mal-chon is currently recognized by the American Canine Hybrid Club (ACHC), the Designer Breed Registry (DBR), and several other clubs for hybrids and designer dogs.

Temperament: Since both the Maltese and the Bichon Frise were bred to be companion dogs, the Mal-chon makes the ultimate companion for families, couples, and singles alike. While it's difficult to determine the exact temperament of the Mal-chon, or any designer dog, most Mal-chons can be described as happy, gentle, and social pups that thrive on being around people. The Mal-chon is a friendly dog who seldom turns down the opportunity to meet someone new, whether human or animal. In terms of energy level, the Mal-chon falls somewhere in the middle. While they are often clownish and love to play, they also enjoy a nap on the couch. Due to their smaller size, Mal-chons also make great apartment dogs and are very adaptable.
