History: The Toy Australian Shepherd is the smallest version of the Australian Shepherd. While no one is entirely sure when the toy version of the Australian Shepherd came to be, the standard Australian Shepherd was bred in the United States by Basque shepherds. After settling in Australia for a short time during the 1800s, these shepherds emigrated to America and brought their dogs with them. The breed was, and still is, known for its herding and tracking abilities. However, it wasn't until the 1950s that the Australian Shepherd became more well-known. After starring in movies and in rodeos, the breed quickly became a crowd favorite. Today, the breed is as popular as ever and exists in multiple sizes including standard, miniature, and toy.

Temperament: Toy Australian Shepherds are intelligent and loyal dogs that are known for their excellent herding abilities. They love to please and are highly trainable, but require early and consistent training. These dogs are very energetic, so they require plenty of exercise. Otherwise, they will quickly become bored and destructive if not given enough mental and physical stimulation. Toy Australian Shepherds do well with children, but they can be wary of strangers due to their protective nature. This is why it's important to socialize a Toy Australian Shepherd early on, or else the breed may be aloof or standoffish during adulthood.
