The Aussiedoodle, also known as the Aussiepoo, is an intelligent and affectionate hybrid created by crossing the Australian Shepherd with the Poodle. First developed in the 1990s, this designer breed blends the Poodle’s low-shedding, allergy-friendly coat with the Australian Shepherd’s energy, loyalty, and eager-to-learn nature. Aussiedoodles come in a wide range of sizes and colours depending on whether the Poodle parent is Miniature or Standard, with coats that vary from wavy to curly. Playful, social, and highly trainable, they are excellent companions for active families and owners who enjoy interactive play and mental stimulation.
Aussiedoodles are available in several generations—such as F1, F1b, F1bb, F2, and F2b—each offering different coat types and shedding levels. F1 Aussiedoodles are a 50/50 mix of Australian Shepherd and Poodle and typically have wavy, low-shedding coats with some variation in size, colour, and texture. F1b Aussiedoodles, created by crossing an F1 with a Poodle, are roughly 75% Poodle and tend to be more hypoallergenic with curlier, lower-shedding coats. F1bb Aussiedoodles (about 87.5% Poodle) have the highest likelihood of being non-shedding and feature tight, curly coats ideal for allergy-sensitive families. F2 Aussiedoodles—bred from two F1 parents—show more coat variability, ranging from straight to curly. F2b Aussiedoodles, the result of an F1 crossed with an F1b, offer a more predictable balance of wavy or curly coats and improved hypoallergenic qualities.
Highly intelligent and energetic, Aussiedoodles require daily exercise and mental engagement—such as puzzle games, obedience work, agility, or active play. When given enough stimulation, they are calm, friendly companions, but boredom can lead to mischief. Their coats need regular brushing and professional grooming to prevent matting, especially in curlier lines. While generally healthy, Aussiedoodles may be prone to conditions such as hip dysplasia or eye issues. With proper care and activity, they thrive as loyal, joyful, and affectionate family dogs.
