After poaching declined, Bullmastiffs became valued as family and estate guardians. The United Kennel Club (UKC) recognized the breed in 1924, followed by the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 1933.
Bullmastiffs are large, muscular dogs with sleek, dense coats in shades of fawn, red, or brindle, often with a distinctive black mask. Calm but assertive, they are deeply affectionate toward their families and protective when necessary. They don’t bark excessively but are always alert. Although generally good with children, early socialization is important due to their size and strength. Bullmastiffs need moderate exercise and regular brushing to keep their coats healthy.
