The Golden Retriever originated in Scotland during the 1800s, primarily developed by Sir Dudley Marjoribanks (later Lord Tweedmouth) who bred flat- and wavy-coated retrievers with Tweed Water Spaniels to create a superior waterfowl hunting dog with an even temper.
