The breed nearly disappeared in the 20th century but was revived in the 1970s when American breeders reestablished the line using descendants of Cuban imports. In 1995, the American Kennel Club (AKC) officially recognized the Havanese, solidifying its status as Cuba’s national dog and one of the world’s most beloved toy breeds.

The Havanese is a small, sturdy dog with a body slightly longer than its height and a soft, flowing coat that can reach up to eight inches in length. Their fur comes in a wide range of colors and patterns, and because they shed very little, they are considered hypoallergenic. These dogs are affectionate, sociable, and eager to please—traits that make them great with children, other pets, and even strangers. While generally calm indoors, they enjoy daily walks and playtime to stay happy and healthy.
