Also known as the Hungarian Puli, the Puli is a centuries-old herding breed famous for its distinctive corded coat and remarkable intelligence. Bred to work alongside shepherds in the Hungarian plains, the Puli is energetic, loyal, and agile—qualities that make it as versatile on the farm as it is affectionate at home. Its unique coat also makes it a hypoallergenic choice for dog lovers with sensitivities.

The Puli’s origins trace back more than 2,000 years to the central Danube Basin, where early Hungarian sheepdogs were influenced by migrating Asian breeds, including the Tibetan Spaniel. By the 9th century, Pulik (plural of Puli) were widely used as herding dogs throughout Hungary. The breed nearly disappeared in the early 1900s, but dedicated efforts revived it, leading to the establishment of a breed standard in 1924. Today, the Puli remains a popular herding, show, and companion dog. Its long, naturally corded coat forms tight, woolly “dreadlocks” that protect it from the weather. Beneath the heavy coat, the Puli is compact, muscular, and surprisingly agile.

Highly intelligent and trainable, the Puli excels in obedience and agility and enjoys having a job to do. They are affectionate with family and great with children and other pets when socialized early. Suspicious of strangers, they also make excellent watchdogs. Pulik are typically healthy but can be prone to hip dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy, and occasional deafness. Their corded coat requires a unique grooming approach—rather than brushing, owners should separate and twirl cords by hand, keeping them clean and dry. Bathing is infrequent, as drying can take several days. Pulis have moderate energy and love activities that challenge them physically and mentally, such as herding or agility work. Their dense coat does not shed, making them a low-shedding, hypoallergenic breed ideal for allergy-sensitive owners.
