The Miniature Schnauzer originated in Germany in the late 19th century, developed by breeding the Standard Schnauzer down in size to create a small but sturdy ratter for farms. The Miniature Schnauzer was officially recognized as a separate breed in 1899 and joined the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 1926 under the Terrier Group — the only Schnauzer classified as such. Compact and squarely built, they feature a double coat that is wiry on the outside and soft underneath, most often in salt-and-pepper, black, or silver color variations. Despite their grooming needs, they shed very little and produce minimal dander, making them one of the most hypoallergenic breeds available.
