Mudi Puppies for sale

0 Puppies found

The Mudi, pronounced "moodie" and sometimes called the Hungarian Mudi or the Driver Dog, is a rare herding breed from Hungary. It is closely related to the Puli and Pumi, from which it was separated as a distinct breed in the 1930s, and Hungarian shepherds still favor it for working sheep and cattle. The breed nearly vanished when many dogs were killed during World War II, and it remains uncommon in the United States. The Federation Cynologique Internationale recognized the Mudi in 1966, and the American Kennel Club followed in January 2022, making it one of the newer members of the AKC herding group.

Mudis are medium-sized dogs, standing 14 to 18 inches tall and weighing about 18 to 29 pounds, with a wavy-to-curly, medium-length coat that needs just weekly brushing. They are lively, intelligent and remarkably versatile, excelling at herding, agility, flyball and obedience work. Around their family the Mudi is friendly and playful, and it makes an alert watchdog without being aggressive toward visitors. This is a high-energy breed that needs long daily walks or jogs plus safe space to run, so it suits active homes. Fanciers describe the temperament as part devoted companion, part tireless farmhand. With good care, Mudis typically live 12 to 14 years.

FAQs

Expect to pay roughly $2,000 to $3,000 for a Mudi puppy in the US. Prices are high because only a handful of American breeders work with this rare Hungarian herding breed, and litters are often spoken for before they are born. Waiting lists of a year or more are common, so contact breeders early.
