Once a trusted companion of the Vikings, this loyal and courageous dog has evolved from a shipmate and hunter to a devoted family pet ready to join in games and adventures at home.
The Norwegian Elkhound has roots tracing back over a thousand years in Norway, possibly as early as 5000 BCE. These dogs were essential to Norse life, serving as protectors, hunters, and guardians of flocks. Known for tracking and holding large game like elk and bear, they combined bravery with intelligence and endurance. The breed rose to prominence in 1877 when it was featured in Norway’s first dog show organized by the Norwegian Hunters Association. It later gained attention in America when President Hoover received one as a gift from Norway. The American Kennel Club recognized the breed in 1913, solidifying its place among beloved working dogs. With their wolf-like appearance, curled tails, and dense double coats of silver, black, and gray, Elkhounds embody both rugged strength and friendly charm.
Norwegian Elkhounds are intelligent, affectionate, and full of energy. They are social dogs that enjoy being around people and are happiest when included in family activities. While friendly and gentle, they are protective and alert, making excellent watchdogs without being aggressive. Their independence means training requires patience, consistency, and positive reinforcement. Elkhounds are sturdy and generally healthy but can be prone to conditions such as eye disorders and heart issues. Their thick double coats require weekly brushing and shed heavily two to three times a year. These active dogs need daily exercise—long walks, hikes, or playtime in open spaces suit them best. With their Viking heritage, loyal temperament, and adventurous spirit, Norwegian Elkhounds make excellent companions for active families who can match their energy and affection.
