Norwegian Elkhounds are intelligent, affectionate, and full of energy. They are social dogs that enjoy being around people and are happiest when included in family activities. While friendly and gentle, they are protective and alert, making excellent watchdogs without being aggressive. Their independence means training requires patience, consistency, and positive reinforcement. Elkhounds are sturdy and generally healthy but can be prone to conditions such as eye disorders and heart issues. Their thick double coats require weekly brushing and shed heavily two to three times a year. These active dogs need daily exercise—long walks, hikes, or playtime in open spaces suit them best.
