Also known simply as the Puggle, this cheerful and affectionate designer breed is a cross between the Beagle and the Pug. First bred in the 1980s, Puggles quickly became one of the most popular hybrid dogs in the United States thanks to their lively personality, loyalty, and low-maintenance care needs. The Puggle has one of the clearest origin stories among designer breeds. In the 1980s, Wisconsin breeder Wallace Havens intentionally crossed a Beagle with a Pug, naming the resulting mix the “Puggle.” Havens also registered the breed with the American Canine Hybrid Club (ACHC), helping to popularize it across the country.
