The Rottweiler, also known as the Rottie or Rott, descends from mastiff-type dogs that drove and guarded cattle herds alongside Roman troops during long marches, breeding with local dogs across Europe to lay the foundation for the breed. Their short coat is a moderate shedder requiring minimal grooming with weekly brushing to manage year-round shedding and maintain glossiness, periodic baths or damp towel wipe-downs, and regular nail trimming due to fast growth.
