Also known as the Saint Berpoo or St. Berpoo, the Saint Berdoodle is a large, affectionate designer breed that combines the size and sweetness of the Saint Bernard with the intelligence and low-shedding coat of the Poodle. Playful, loyal, and gentle, Saint Berdoodles are friendly with children and thrive in family environments. Their loving nature and eagerness to please make them both dependable companions and trainable pets for owners of all experience levels.
The Saint Berdoodle originated in the United States, likely during the 1980s amid the “designer dog craze,” when breeders began crossing purebred dogs to combine the best traits of each parent. This hybrid pairs the gentle, protective nature of the Saint Bernard with the smart, hypoallergenic tendencies of the Poodle. Though not recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC), the Saint Berdoodle is recognized by the American Canine Hybrid Club (ACHC), the Designer Breed Registry (DBR), and other hybrid clubs. Physically, Saint Berdoodles are large, sturdy dogs with coats that range from short and curly to medium and wavy, typically appearing in white and brown, white and black, or red and white.
Saint Berdoodles are known for their gentle, patient temperament and strong desire to be near their families. They’re excellent with children and usually friendly toward other pets, though they may be cautious with strangers until properly socialized. Intelligent and eager to please, they respond well to training and benefit from early obedience work to manage their size. Healthwise, Saint Berdoodles are generally robust but can inherit conditions such as hip dysplasia, bloat, or ear infections. Grooming needs depend on coat type—Poodle-like coats require more brushing to avoid tangles, while shorter coats need only occasional maintenance. A monthly bath, regular nail trimming, and dental care are recommended. These calm, adaptable dogs prefer light daily exercise, such as a couple of short walks or gentle play sessions, followed by plenty of cuddle time. Depending on which parent they take after, Saint Berdoodles may shed lightly to moderately, especially during seasonal changes.
