The Soft-Coated Wheaten Terrier, also known as the Wheaten or Wheatie, is an affectionate and energetic terrier breed from Ireland. Originally bred as an all-purpose farm dog, this cheerful and loyal companion is known for its silky coat, playful personality, and excellent rapport with children.

Though the Soft-Coated Wheaten Terrier’s early history is not well-documented, it is believed to share ancestry with the Kerry Blue Terrier and the Irish Terrier. For centuries, Wheatens served as versatile farm dogs across Ireland — guarding homes, hunting vermin, and assisting with herding. Despite their long history, they weren’t officially recognized as a distinct breed until 1937, when the Irish Kennel Club granted them recognition. The breed made its way to the United States in 1946, gaining broader popularity in the 1950s before being recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 1973. Today, the Wheaten is admired as a loyal family companion and adaptable pet. These medium-sized terriers have soft, wavy coats that come in two varieties: the silky Irish coat and the denser American coat. Puppies are often born red, brown, or white, and their color lightens to the signature wheaten shade as they mature. Wheatens are lively, intelligent, and affectionate dogs that love people and get along well with children and other dogs. Their exuberant greetings — known as the “Wheaten Greetin’” — often include joyful jumps and face licks. While generally friendly, their strong prey drive means they may chase smaller animals unless socialized early. The breed is relatively healthy but can be prone to genetic conditions such as protein-losing nephropathy, renal dysplasia, and Addison’s disease, so responsible breeding is essential. Their wavy double coat requires regular care — daily brushing to prevent matting and routine grooming sessions from an early age. Because of their high energy, Wheatens thrive on daily exercise, from long walks to playtime in the yard. Though their coat doesn’t shed, it needs frequent maintenance to stay healthy and mat-free. Affectionate, loyal, and full of energy, the Soft-Coated Wheaten Terrier is a charming family dog that brings warmth and enthusiasm to every household.
