The Xoloitzcuintli — also known as the Mexican Hairless Dog or simply Xolo — is an ancient breed that has existed for more than 3,000 years. Revered by the Aztecs as sacred companions and spiritual guides, these loyal and affectionate dogs are deeply rooted in Mexican history. Today, the Xoloitzcuintli is cherished for its intelligence, calm demeanor, and unique appearance, making it a devoted family companion with an exotic heritage.
Originating in Mexico, the Xoloitzcuintli was named after the Aztec god Xolotl and was believed to guide souls into the afterlife. Over the centuries, Xolos have served many roles — from hunting and guarding to companionship — and remain highly regarded in Mexican culture. The breed comes in three sizes (toy, miniature, and standard) and two coat types: the famous hairless variety and a coated one with a short, sleek coat. The hairless Xolo has smooth, warm skin that often features a tuft of hair on its head or tail, along with large, upright ears that resemble a bat’s. Despite their striking look, Xolos are known for their affectionate, gentle, and loyal nature. They form deep bonds with their families and thrive on human companionship. Because of their intelligence and sensitivity, they respond well to positive training methods but may develop “Small Dog Syndrome” if not properly socialized or given consistent structure. Grooming needs are minimal — their skin should be kept moisturized but not overtreated, as too much lotion can cause acne. Regular nail trimming and dental care are essential. Active yet calm indoors, Xolos enjoy daily walks and play sessions but are equally content relaxing beside their owners afterward. Due to their minimal hair, they shed very little and are considered hypoallergenic, making them a great choice for allergy sufferers.
