The York-Chon — also known as the Yorkie Bichon or Yorkie-Chon — is a delightful hybrid between the Yorkshire Terrier and the Bichon Frise. Like many designer breeds, the York-Chon originated in the United States during the late 20th century, likely around the 1980s or 90s. Breeders aimed to combine the Yorkshire Terrier’s bold, confident personality with the Bichon Frise’s sweet-natured, hypoallergenic coat — a combination that quickly captured the hearts of dog lovers. The breed is recognized by organizations such as the American Canine Hybrid Club (ACHC) and the Designer Dogs Kennel Club (DDKC). York-Chons have soft, dense coats that can come in various colors, including black, white, gold, gray, and brown. Their ears may stand upright like the Yorkie’s or droop like the Bichon’s, giving each dog a slightly different, charming appearance. In temperament, York-Chons are intelligent, friendly, and affectionate, with an independent streak that makes them slightly more adaptable to alone time than other small breeds. They respond well to positive training but may inherit a bit of the Yorkie’s stubbornness, so consistency is key. Their coats should be brushed several times a week to prevent tangles and trimmed regularly around the face to avoid tear stains. A short daily walk and some indoor playtime are enough to keep them happy and healthy, as they tend to stay active indoors. The York-Chon is considered hypoallergenic and sheds very little, making it a great option for allergy sufferers.
