The Scottish Deerhound is a noble and ancient sighthound once bred exclusively for Scottish royalty to hunt large game, particularly red deer. Tracing their roots back to 17th-century Scotland — and possibly even earlier — the Scottish Deerhound has long been admired for its strength, endurance, and elegance. Their status as a royal hunting dog nearly led to their extinction several times in history, as only the upper class was allowed to own them. The breed was eventually revived and brought to the United States in the late 1800s, earning American Kennel Club (AKC) recognition in 1886. Scottish Deerhounds are tall and wiry-coated, with long, tapering muzzles and graceful builds. Their rough outer coat and softer facial hair come in shades of grey, brindle, and black, adding to their regal yet rugged appearance.

Scottish Deerhounds are affectionate, calm, and eager to please, making them excellent companions for experienced dog owners. Health concerns in the breed include cardiomyopathy, osteosarcoma, and bloat. Despite their gentle temperament, these dogs need plenty of daily activity and space to thrive. They shed moderately year-round and are not recommended for allergy sufferers.
