Dalmatians are extremely energetic, sensitive, and loyal. They are very playful and friendly, but dislike being left alone. These dogs require a significant amount of exercise, at least an hour or two a day. Dalmatians first gained recognition as coach dogs, when they ran alongside carriages, protecting the horses. Being so compatible with horses led them to become assistants in fire departments. Because of this, they soon became mascots for fire departments. Dalmatians have also worked as hunting dogs, guards, and even as circus performers. Today, they are mainly family dogs, but still have a good relationship with horses.
