Size and Build
Dalmatians are medium-sized, athletic dogs with a well-balanced, symmetrical build that provides both strength and agility. Males typically stand between 22-24 inches tall at the withers and weigh 64-75 pounds, while females range from 20-22 inches in height and weigh 55-65 pounds. Their well-developed musculature showcases a lean yet powerful frame, ideal for endurance activities.
Coat and Colors
The breed's signature feature is its short, dense, glossy, and sleek coat, characterized by a white background adorned with either black or liver-colored spots. These spots are well-defined and evenly distributed across the entire body, including the ears and tail. The breed standard recognizes only two colors for registration: white with black spots and white with liver spots. Dalmatian puppies are born entirely white, with spots appearing within weeks. Seasonal coat changes may affect the coat's density but not the iconic spotting pattern.
Distinctive Features
Dalmatians have a long, flat head with moderate width between the ears and a pronounced stop. Their medium-sized eyes are set well apart, conveying intelligence; the color varies, with black-spotted dogs having dark brown eyes, while liver-spotted dogs display amber tones. Ears are high-set, wide, and taper towards rounded tips, lying close to the head and well spotted. The tail is long, tapering, thick at the base, and carried with a slight curve. When in motion, their gait is smooth, efficient, and ground-covering, with legs tracking straight in both front and rear views.
Gender Differences
Males tend to be taller and heavier, exhibiting a slightly more dominant temperament, which may require firmer leadership during training. Females, being slightly smaller and more delicate in build, may show moodier nuances but generally maintain a stable and friendly disposition. Both genders conform to the breed standard, but differences in size and personality should be considered by prospective owners.
