Size and Build
The Goldendoodle is a medium-sized canine, with males typically reaching heights between 22 to 24 inches and weighing 65 to 75 pounds; females are slightly smaller, standing 20 to 22 inches tall and weighing 55 to 65 pounds. Their physique is athletic and well-proportioned, showcasing a muscular frame that reflects their working heritage. The body structure presents a harmonious blend of strength and agility, with a slightly tucked abdomen, broad chest, and well-muscled limbs that support dynamic movement.
Coat and Colors
The coat of a Goldendoodle can vary significantly due to genetic factors but generally falls into three categories: tight curls, loose waves, and straight or flat. Curly coats resemble those of the Standard Poodle and tend to shed less, requiring regular grooming to prevent mats, especially in sensitive areas like behind the ears. Loose, wavy coats offer a soft, shaggy appearance reminiscent of the Golden Retriever, with moderate grooming needs. Straight coats are lower maintenance overall.
The color spectrum includes shades such as black, copper, ultra cream, champagne, grey, golden, apricot, chocolate, coffee, red, red & white, and parti-colors. Lighter highlights may appear on feathering and paws, and the coat often lightens as the dog ages.
Distinctive Features
Goldendoodles have broad heads with well-defined muzzles and square noses, which may be black or brown depending on coat color, occasionally showing freckled pigmentation in parti-colored dogs. Their eyes are round, expressive, and usually match the coat color, set beneath hair that forms natural eyebrows. Ears are set high and hang close to the head, covered in either loose curls or waves. Their tails are carried in a gentle saber shape, flowing naturally with movement and never excessively curled. The gait is purposeful, elastic, and covers ground efficiently, with dogs often prancing playfully when relaxed.
Gender Differences
Males are generally larger and more robust than females, with a heavier bone structure and slightly more muscular build. Females may exhibit a bit more independence and subtlety, while males often display greater exuberance and playfulness, although individual variation is common. Gender does not significantly affect coat type or color distribution, which is more genetically determined.
It's important to note that no official breed standard exists for Goldendoodles due to their hybrid nature, but responsible breeders aim for good size, health, and balanced temperament with well-proportioned features.
