Size and Build
The West Highland Terrier is a small, sturdy breed with a height range of 10 to 11 inches. Weighing between 15 and 20 pounds, they have a compact, muscular frame. Their head features a slightly domed skull, a pronounced stop, and a strong jaw with a correct scissor bite. A robust neck leads into well-angled shoulders, with short, powerful legs covered in dense, coarse hair. They have a deep chest and well-arched ribs, with broad hindquarters and flexible stifles supporting agile movement. Their larger front paws have thick black nails, all covered in short hair. Their tail is straight and carried upright, complementing their lively demeanor.
Coat and Colors
The Westie's hallmark is its pure white double coat. The outer layer is harsh and straight, approximately 2 inches long, paired with a soft, insulating undercoat. The pure white color is the only one accepted by breed standards, essential to their identity and show requirements. The coat's texture requires regular grooming and hand-stripping to maintain its characteristic harshness.
Distinctive Features
The Westie's head is slightly rounded with a clear stop and wide-set, medium-sized dark eyes that express alertness and intelligence. Their small, erect ears have sharp, defined tips and are covered with short, smooth hair. Movement is fluid, with good reach from the shoulders and powerful rear leg action, resulting in a purposeful gait.
Gender Differences
Though males and females are similar in size, males tend to be slightly more robust. Females might exhibit more independence, while males often have a more assertive demeanor; however, personalities vary among individuals. For show eligibility, males must have fully descended testicles.
