The Akita was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1972 and is believed to have been introduced to America by Helen Keller after her visit to Japan. These large dogs feature a thick, fuzzy double coat in various colors, a broad muzzle, pointy ears, and moderate year-round shedding that becomes heavy once or twice annually.
Alert, dignified, and courageous, Akitas are deeply affectionate and loving with family members but tend to be hesitant around strangers, making them excellent guardians.
