Chihuahua Puppies for sale in Albuquerque, New Mexico

The Chihuahua is a tiny yet bold breed with a personality that far exceeds its size. Often compared behaviorally to terriers, this spirited little dog has ancient roots dating back to pre-Columbian times. Despite weighing just a few pounds, Chihuahuas are known for their intelligence, loyalty, and courage. Their wide variety of colors, coat lengths, and patterns only add to their charm, making them one of the most recognizable and beloved toy breeds in the world.

The Chihuahua’s exact origins are debated — some believe the breed was brought from China to Mexico by traders and later crossed with native dogs, while others trace it back to the ancient Techichi breed of Central America. The modern Chihuahua was first documented in Mexico’s Chihuahua state in the 1850s, from which it takes its name. Americans quickly fell in love with the breed, and it was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 1904. With their domed heads, expressive eyes, and big-dog attitude, Chihuahuas make fiercely devoted companions. They tend to bond closely with one person, showing protective affection, though they can warm up to others with proper socialization. Chihuahuas are adaptable, needing only light daily exercise and minimal grooming — weekly brushing for long coats and occasional brushing for smooth coats. Confident, charming, and endlessly loyal, the Chihuahua remains a classic choice for those seeking a small dog with a huge heart.
