The modern Chihuahua was first documented in Mexico’s Chihuahua state in the 1850s, from which it takes its name. Americans quickly fell in love with the breed, and it was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 1904. With their domed heads, expressive eyes, and big-dog attitude, Chihuahuas make fiercely devoted companions. They tend to bond closely with one person, showing protective affection, though they can warm up to others with proper socialization. Chihuahuas are adaptable, needing only light daily exercise and minimal grooming — weekly brushing for long coats and occasional brushing for smooth coats. Confident, charming, and endlessly loyal, the Chihuahua remains a classic choice for those seeking a small dog with a huge heart.
