Also known as the Springer, Springer Spaniel, or originally the Norfolk Spaniel, the English Springer Spaniel is a cheerful and affectionate breed bred specifically to work closely with humans. These eager-to-please dogs are devoted to their families and thrive on companionship, making them a wonderful choice for households of all sizes. Known for their intelligence, athleticism, and gentle nature, English Springers are both talented hunters and loving family pets.
The English Springer Spaniel has a long and distinguished history. Spaniel-type dogs have existed for centuries, originally bred as hunting companions. In the 1800s and early 1900s, spaniels were categorized by their hunting roles rather than distinct breeds — smaller ones were “Cockers,” used to hunt woodcock, while larger ones “sprang” game from hiding, giving rise to the Springer name. By 1902, the English Springer Spaniel and the Cocker Spaniel were recognized as separate breeds. The Springer arrived in the U.S. in 1913 and quickly became a favorite, admired for its versatility, loyalty, and cheerful demeanor.
Medium-sized and sturdy, the English Springer Spaniel has a balanced, athletic build and a soft, expressive face. Their coats are medium-length, often black and white, liver and white, or tricolor, with feathering on the legs, ears, and chest. These dogs are affectionate, alert, and social, thriving on attention and companionship. They respond well to positive training and get along great with children and other pets. Regular walks and playtime keep them happy, and brushing once or twice a week maintains their coat. English Springers are generally healthy but can be prone to hip dysplasia and eye conditions. With their loving nature and adaptable temperament, they make excellent family companions.
