Developed to create a healthier version of the French Bulldog while keeping its signature look, the Frenchton inherits the Frenchie’s playful personality and affectionate nature along with the Boston Terrier’s energy and intelligence. The Frenchton originated in the United States during the 1990s, when breeders began crossing French Bulldogs with Boston Terriers to reduce the respiratory issues common in Frenchies. Typically, a Frenchton’s lineage is about 75% French Bulldog and 25% Boston Terrier, resulting in a dog that retains the Frenchie’s sturdy build and iconic bat ears but with a slightly longer muzzle and improved breathing. Recognized by the International Designer Canine Registry (IDCR) and the American Canine Hybrid Association (ACHA), this crossbreed has quickly become one of the most popular French Bulldog mixes. Frenchtons are affectionate, loyal, and eager to please, making them easy to train and a joy to have at home. They thrive on human interaction and prefer being near their family at all times. Their short, glossy coat requires only occasional brushing to stay clean, and their moderate exercise needs make them ideal for urban living. Just 30 minutes of daily walks and light playtime keep them happy and healthy. While generally hardy, Frenchtons can still inherit minor respiratory or eye issues from their parent breeds, so owners should avoid strenuous activity in hot weather.
