Giant Schnauzer Puppies for sale

Also known as the Munich Schnauzer, Munchener, Russian Bear Schnauzer, or Riesenschnauzer, the Giant Schnauzer is the largest and most powerful of the Schnauzer family. Originally bred in Germany to drive cattle and guard farms, this bold, intelligent, and loyal breed has evolved into an exceptional companion for active owners. Strong, alert, and deeply devoted, the Giant Schnauzer excels as both a working dog and a protective family member, making it an ideal choice for those who love outdoor adventures like hiking, running, or biking.

The Giant Schnauzer was developed in the Middle Ages in southern Germany, primarily to help cattlemen drive livestock to market. Breeders sought to create a larger and more robust version of the Standard Schnauzer, crossing it with larger working breeds such as rough-coated sheepdogs, smooth-coated cattle dogs, and possibly the Great Dane. The result was a resilient and versatile dog with a dense, weather-resistant coat capable of withstanding harsh outdoor conditions. Over time, the Giant Schnauzer transitioned from herding duties to serving in stockyards, butcher shops, and even police and military roles. Recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 1930, the breed gained further prominence with the foundation of the Giant Schnauzer Club of America in 1962. Today, it remains admired for its intelligence, loyalty, and strength.

Giant Schnauzers are large, athletic dogs with distinctive bushy eyebrows, beards, and wiry double coats in black or salt-and-pepper shades. Their robust build and keen expression reflect both power and intelligence. Typically, their ears and tails are cropped for a traditional working-dog look, though natural ears and tails are increasingly common. Despite their imposing presence, Giant Schnauzers are affectionate and deeply bonded to their families. They are protective yet gentle with children and make excellent watchdogs due to their alert and confident nature. Because they are highly intelligent, they require firm but positive training and mental engagement. Grooming is essential — weekly brushing and periodic professional hand-stripping help maintain their coat’s texture and water-resistant quality. Regular ear cleaning and nail trimming should also be part of their care routine. Healthwise, the breed is generally strong but can be prone to hip dysplasia, autoimmune thyroiditis, and eye issues, so reputable breeders should conduct regular health screenings. As energetic working dogs, Giant Schnauzers need daily exercise — ideally over an hour of vigorous activity like running, hiking, or swimming — along with mental stimulation to prevent boredom. Despite their size, they shed very little and are considered hypoallergenic, making them a great choice for active families seeking a loyal, low-shedding companion.
