The Havapoo is a cross between the Havanese and the Toy or Miniature Poodle, bred to produce a loyal, cheerful, and low-allergen companion. Though the exact origins of the Havapoo are unclear, the breed likely emerged in the United States during the 1990s as part of the rising popularity of designer dogs. It wasn’t until the late 2010s that the Havapoo became especially sought after for its loving temperament and minimal shedding. In 2009, the International Designer Canine Association (IDCA) officially recognized the Havapoo, cementing its place among beloved hybrid breeds.
Havapoos typically have small, rectangular bodies with soft, wavy to curly coats that can come in a wide variety of colors, including cream, chocolate, black, or apricot. They usually inherit floppy ears and expressive, dark eyes that give them a sweet, teddy bear-like appearance. Personality-wise, Havapoos are gentle, social, and devoted to their families. They get along well with children, other dogs, and even cats, making them one of the most adaptable designer breeds. While not excessively energetic, they enjoy daily walks and play sessions and need both physical and mental stimulation to stay happy. Grooming is relatively easy—brushing once or twice a week and occasional trims are enough to keep their coat soft and tangle-free.
