The Jack Russell Terrier — also known as the Jack, JRT, or Jack Russell — is a spirited and energetic small breed originally bred to help hunters drive foxes from their dens. Known for their boldness, intelligence, and boundless enthusiasm, Jack Russells are entertaining companions full of character and charm. Despite their small size, they have big personalities and a fearless nature that makes them both adventurous and affectionate family dogs.
The breed was developed in mid-19th century England by Parson John Russell, whose goal was to create a tenacious working terrier for fox hunting — which is why the breed is sometimes called the Parson Russell Terrier. When the breed spread to the United States in the early 1900s, debates over its purpose led to two distinctions: the American Kennel Club (AKC) recognized the Parson Russell Terrier, while the Jack Russell Terrier Club of America (JRTCA) maintained the traditional working-dog version. Compact and athletic, Jack Russells have smooth, rough, or broken coats that are primarily white with brown or black markings. They are highly intelligent but independent, requiring firm and consistent training, along with plenty of exercise and mental stimulation. Without it, they may become bored or destructive. Loyal and affectionate toward their families, Jack Russells do best with experienced owners who can match their energy. With weekly brushing, regular exercise, and attention, the Jack Russell Terrier makes a lively, intelligent, and devoted companion that’s always ready for action.
