This livestock guardian dog is an ancient Molosser-type breed from Bulgaria. They are rare and hard to find in the US since they only came here in 2004. Loving and devoted to family, they do well with a job to do, such as guarding flocks.
Karakachans can be predisposed to certain hereditary health conditions, including hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, gastric torsion, and heart conditions such as dilated cardiomyopathy. Working with a responsible breeder who screens for these issues is important.
