The Maltese reached America in the late 19th century and was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 1888. Today, this elegant little dog remains a favorite for its loving personality and luxurious coat.
The Maltese is small, compact, and full of confidence. Its long, silky white coat nearly touches the floor, often giving it a regal appearance. Known for being affectionate and social, the Maltese loves attention and thrives when included in family life. These dogs are quick learners who respond well to positive reinforcement and enjoy mental challenges like puzzle toys and obedience games. Although playful and spirited, they don’t require vigorous exercise—a daily walk or some indoor playtime is usually enough. The Maltese’s coat requires daily brushing to prevent tangles and maintain its pristine look, along with occasional baths and face cleaning to avoid tear stains. This breed sheds very little thanks to its lack of an undercoat, making it a great option for those seeking a low-shedding companion.
