The Miniature Schnauzer was officially recognized as a separate breed in 1899 and joined the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 1926 under the Terrier Group — the only Schnauzer classified as such. Compact and squarely built, they feature a double coat that is wiry on the outside and soft underneath, most often in salt-and-pepper, black, or silver color variations. Grooming is essential for this double-coated breed: brushing two to three times weekly and professional trimming every couple of months keeps their coat in top condition.
