The Newfypoo originated in the United States, likely during the 1980s or 90s when breeders began creating intentional crossbreeds during the “designer dog craze.” The goal was to blend the Newfoundland’s strength, loyalty, and gentle temperament with the Poodle’s intelligence and low-shedding coat. The result was a large, loving dog with both elegance and working ability. The International Designer Canine Registry (IDCR) began recognizing the breed in 2009. Newfypoos can vary greatly in appearance depending on which parent they take after—some have tight curls like a Poodle, while others have the long, wavy fur of a Newfoundland. Their thick, dense coats can come in colors like black, brown, gray, or cream and need regular grooming to stay tangle-free and shiny.

Newfypoos are intelligent, loyal, and affectionate, making them excellent family pets. They are social dogs who enjoy spending time with people and other pets. Their calm nature comes from the Newfoundland side, while their alertness and trainability are inherited from the Poodle. These dogs love to play, swim, and learn new tricks but can become bored without enough activity or mental engagement. Daily walks and interactive play sessions are essential to keep them happy and balanced. Newfypoos are generally healthy but can be prone to conditions such as heart issues, joint dysplasia, and eye problems, so regular veterinary checkups are important. Though not hypoallergenic, they shed less than purebred Newfoundlands and require consistent grooming to prevent matting.
