The Old English Sheepdog originated in England during the early 1800s, where it was primarily used to drive sheep and cattle to market. Though its precise ancestry remains uncertain, the breed is believed to descend from the Bearded Collie and Russian Owtchar. Recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1888, the Old English Sheepdog transitioned from a farm worker to a show and companion dog by the late 19th century. Its popularity grew immensely in the 1960s and 70s, fueled by its frequent appearances in movies, television, and advertising. Today, the Old English Sheepdog remains a symbol of friendly strength and timeless charm. Its long, shaggy double coat—often a mix of white, gray, and blue—gives it its trademark “teddy bear” look, while its powerful build and confident gait reflect its working-dog heritage.
Old English Sheepdogs are affectionate, intelligent, and eager to be part of family life. They form strong bonds with their owners and get along wonderfully with children, often showing a gentle, protective nature. While calm indoors, they still need daily physical and mental exercise to stay content—whether it’s a brisk walk, playtime, or obedience training. Their thick, high-maintenance coat requires frequent brushing to prevent matting and keep it clean. Regular grooming, including ear and eye care, is essential to maintain their health and appearance. Though generally healthy, OES can be prone to hip dysplasia, deafness, and eye conditions. These dogs shed heavily throughout the year and are not hypoallergenic.
