The Papillon descends from the dwarf spaniels that graced the laps of European nobility during the 16th century. Thanks to devoted breeders, the Papillon was revived in the late 19th century and maintained much of its original appearance—its small, refined frame and signature feathered ears are almost identical to those seen in Renaissance paintings. The breed gained renewed fame in 1999 when a Papillon won Best in Show at the Westminster Kennel Club. Today, Papillons remain cherished for their intelligence, agility, and affectionate personality. They typically have long, silky coats in white paired with colors like red, black, or fawn, and their elegant plumed tails arch gracefully over their backs.
