Also known as the PP, the Pudelpointer is a calm, level-headed hunting dog that excels as a pointer, retriever, and gun dog. Friendly, intelligent, and eager to please, this versatile German breed combines the best traits of its ancestors—the Poodle and the English Pointer—making it equally capable in the field and affectionate at home.
The Pudelpointer was first developed in Germany in 1881 when breeders crossed English Pointers with Poodles. The goal was to create a hunting breed that possessed the Pointer’s excellent nose and instinct for game alongside the Poodle’s intelligence, love for water, and trainability. Early generations leaned heavily toward Poodle characteristics, so additional Pointer lines were introduced to achieve the perfect balance. Today, the Pudelpointer is recognized as a distinct purebred rather than a hybrid and is officially registered with organizations such as the AKC and UKC. The breed typically comes in black or liver brown, sometimes with small white markings on the chest or toes. Its dense, double-layered coat can be wiry or smooth, featuring a beard that many owners trim for cleanliness. Beneath their rugged appearance lies a muscular, athletic build ideal for demanding outdoor work.
Pudelpointers are affectionate, loyal, and even-tempered, bonding closely with their families. While they are gentle with children, supervision is recommended due to their size and energy level. These dogs have a strong prey drive, so early socialization is essential if they will live alongside smaller pets. They thrive on both physical and mental engagement—calm and affectionate at home, yet tireless and focused in the field. Generally healthy, the breed can be prone to hip dysplasia, Von Willebrand’s Disease, and bloat. Weekly brushing keeps their coat free of debris, and they only need baths occasionally, as their coat naturally resists dirt and odor. Pudelpointers require at least an hour of daily activity, such as long walks, retrieving games, or off-leash running. They shed seasonally due to their double coat but are still considered hypoallergenic, making them a great choice for active owners seeking a low-odor, low-shedding hunting companion.
