Originating in China, Pugs were brought to Europe by traders in the late 1500s and quickly became royal favorites, particularly in Dutch and British courts. They were first exhibited in 1861 and recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 1885. Compact yet sturdy, Pugs are typically fawn with black facial markings or entirely black. Their round eyes, wrinkled muzzle, and curled tail give them their unmistakable look. Pugs are sociable, gentle, and thrive on human companionship. They get along well with children and other pets, though they can be stubborn at times. Regular play and short walks are enough to keep them healthy and happy. Because of their flat faces, Pugs can struggle in extreme temperatures and are prone to respiratory and eye issues, so owners should monitor them closely. Grooming is simple but should include cleaning their facial folds and brushing weekly.
