Saint Bernards are characterized by their droopy eyes, floppy ears, pronounced jowls, and large, muscular build. These calm, intelligent dogs are gentle with children and welcoming toward strangers, though they remain protective if their family is threatened. Training should start early while they’re still manageable in size. Grooming involves weekly brushing (daily during shedding seasons), and owners should clean their eyes regularly to avoid staining. While Saint Bernards don’t need strenuous exercise, they do require daily walks to stay fit and prevent joint issues. They are moderate shedders year-round, with heavier shedding in spring and fall, and—true to their alpine origins—prefer cooler weather to heat.
