Also known as the St. Bernard or Saint Bernhard, the Saint Bernard is a gentle giant famous for its patience, loyalty, and calm demeanor. Despite their massive size, these dogs are affectionate and friendly, earning a reputation as loving family companions and dependable protectors. The breed originated in the Swiss Alps, where Saint Bernards were bred by hospice monks to rescue lost travelers and haul carts through deep snow. Saint Bernards are characterized by their droopy eyes, floppy ears, pronounced jowls, and large, muscular build. Their coats can be short or long, most commonly in shades of red, brown, or brindle combined with white. These calm, intelligent dogs are gentle with children and welcoming toward strangers, though they remain protective if their family is threatened. Training should start early while they’re still manageable in size. Grooming involves weekly brushing (daily during shedding seasons), and owners should clean their eyes regularly to avoid staining. While Saint Bernards don’t need strenuous exercise, they do require daily walks to stay fit and prevent joint issues. They are moderate shedders year-round, with heavier shedding in spring and fall, and—true to their alpine origins—prefer cooler weather to heat.
